Virginia Tech led by seven at the half, shot 54 percent from the field and ran away from Florida State, 96-85, in the second round of the 2016 ACC Tournament on Wednesday.
The Hokies (19-13, 11-8 ACC) won its sixth in a row. Tech plays #3 seed Miami (24-6, 13-5 ACC) Thursday at 9:30 p.m. in the tournament quarterfinals.
Florida State (1-13, 9-11 ACC) never led as the Hokies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening 30 seconds, and took the lead for good on a Justin Bibbs three with 12:18 left in the first half.
Tech led 45-38 at the break, and took control with a 12-2 run midway through the second half that stretched a six-point lead to 16 at 74-58 on a Devin Wilson layup with 9:07 left.
The ‘Noles made one last push to get the margin to nine, at 80-71, on a three by Devon Bookert with 6:33 to go, but the Hokies clamped down on D, holding FSU without a field goal for the next three minutes before putting the game away at the foul line.
Florida State shot 41.2 percent from the field for the game (28-of-68) and was just 8-of-29 (27.6 percent) from three-point range.
Bookert led the Seminoles with 19 points. Jaquez Smith had 11 points and 14 rebounds for FSU.
Seth Allen had 20 to lead Tech, which shot 53.7 percent from the field for the game (29-of-54) and was 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from three-point range.
The Hokies were also 30-of-37 from the foul line; Florida State struggled at the stripe, going 21-of-35 on the night.
