policeAt approximately 3:20 p.m., Wednesday (April 13), Virginia State Police initiated a traffic stop on a BMW traveling north on Interstate 81 at the 214 mile marker in Augusta County.

The violation was for an equipment violation. The BMW stopped for the trooper, but as the trooper walked up to the vehicle, the BMW sped off continuing north on I-81 at an excessive rate of speed. A pursuit was initiated.

The BMW exited I-81 and fled from the trooper along Route 11, at which point the troopers lost sight of the vehicle. A search of the area resulted in the abandoned BMW being located behind a church on Barterbrook Road. Search efforts continued and the driver of the BMW was located shortly after 7 p.m. near a business in the 1200 block of Greenville Avenue. The male subject was apprehended without incident. State police are working to confirm the individual’s identity and charges are pending.

Staunton Police Department and the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the search efforts.
