The Virginia Department of Transportation will briefly close the right lane of Interstate 81 southbound on the night of Tuesday, Oct. 15 to repair a small sinkhole.
Crews recently discovered the two-foot-wide sinkhole in a ditch next to the right shoulder at mile marker 206.6 about one mile north of the Raphine/Steeles Tavern exit. Repairs were scheduled for Sunday morning, but persistent rains forced the work to be postponed. Traffic barrels mark a shoulder closure at the site, but monitoring of the sinkhole has shown it to be stable.
The right lane of I-81 will close at 7 p.m. Tuesday when repair work begins. Contractors will excavate and fill the hole, and plan to finish early Wednesday morning. The VDOT Traffic Operations Center will use variable message signs to warn drivers of the lane closure. All work is weather permitting.
