UVA women’s tennis claims three singles wins to conclude play at Duke Invite

uva-logo-new2The UVA women’s tennis team posted three singles wins to highlight final-day action at the Duke Fab Four Invitational Sunday (Sept. 14) in Cary, N.C.

Juniors Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and sophomore Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) each posted singles victories. In addition, Nauta and Epstein added a doubles win as the Cavaliers wrapped up their opening tournament of the fall season.

In the blue singles flight, Nauta took fifth place with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Florida’s Stefani Stojic. Faure added a seventh-place finish with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Oklahoma State’s Vladica Babic.

In the white singles flight, Epstein posted a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over San Jose State’s Gaelle Rey 7-5, 6-1. Alabama’s Erin Routliffe defeated junior Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) 6-4, 6-1 in the consolation final.

In the black singles flight, Florida’s Spencer Liang beat freshman Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 in a consolation match.

Epstein and Nauta posted an 8-3 win over Oklahoma State’s Babic and Katarina Adamovich in the consolation final of the blue doubles flight.

Morton and Mercer placed fourth in the white doubles flight after dropping an 8-7(4) decision to Florida’s Brianna Morgan and Brooke Austin.

Faure and Duke’s Rachel Kahan added an 8-4 win over Furman’s Ansley Speaks and Alex Moreno in the third-place match in the black doubles flight.

The Cavaliers return to action at the William & Mary Fall Classic on Friday-Sunday, Sept. 19-21.
