UVA men’s lacrosse hosts Johns Hopkins in NCAA Tournament

uva lacrosseUVA has received a bid to the 2015 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship as the No. 7 seed and will host the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in the first round on Sunday (May 10) at 1 p.m., at Klöckner Stadium. The game will be televised live on ESPNU in HD. This marks the third season (1971 and 2011) where Virginia was seeded as the tournament’s No. 7 team.

Virginia, ranked No. 8 in both the USILA coaches and Cascade/Maverik media polls, enters the NCAA Tournament with a 10-4 overall mark. Johns Hopkins, ranked No. 16 in coaches poll and No. 17 in the media poll, earns the at-large and enters the NCAA Tournament with a 9-6 record.

This is Virginia’s 37th tournament appearance overall, third behind Johns Hopkins (43) and Maryland (38). Virginia has won five NCAA titles and has received a bid in 21 of Dom Starsia’s 23 seasons on Grounds.

Johns Hopkins and Virginia meet in the NCAA Tournament’s First Round for the second season in a row. Virginia is 30-58-1 all-time against Johns Hopkins. Sunday’s game will be the 16th time in NCAA Tournament history UVa and Johns Hopkins have met. No two teams have faced each other more in the tournament than the Cavaliers and Blue Jays. Johns Hopkins holds a 9-6 advantage over UVa in NCAA Tournament action, but the Cavaliers have won four of the last six meetings in the tournament. Johns Hopkins beat UVa 14-8 in last season’s NCAA First Round game at Klöckner Stadium.

The winner of this game faces the winner of Sunday’s game between the winner of either Bryant or Marist at Syracuse (No. 2 seed) in the quarterfinals at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium, in Annapolis, Md., on Sunday (May 17). The quarterfinals will be televised on ESPN2 in HD.
