UVA basketball lands Mamadi Diakite: Five-star recruit may reclassify to 2015

uva-basketballFive-star power forward Mamadi Diakite announced on Tuesday that he plans to attend the University of Virginia, and indicated in an interview that there is an “80 percent chance” that he will reclassify to the class of 2015 and enroll at UVA in the summer.

The 6’9”, 190-pounder would almost certainly redshirt his freshman season if he did classify in 2015.

Diakite, a native of Guinea in West Africa, attended Blue Ridge School just up the road from Charlottesville in rural Greene County in 2014-2015.

Whether he remains in the class of 2016 or effectively becomes a part of it by redshirting, Diakite is a centerpiece of the group that will take the ball from veterans Malcolm Brogdon, Anthony Gill, Mike Tobey and London Perrantes.

Last month, Memphis transfer Austin Nichols, a Top 25 recruit out of high school who was a first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection in 2014-2015, announced his plans to transfer to UVA, and he will become eligible in 2016.

The 2016 recruiting class had already included three four-stars: shooting guard Kyle Guy, point guard Ty Jerome and power forward Jay Huff.
