Tonsler Park basketball courts and lighting system upgrade complete

Contributors

CharlottesvilleThe Charlottesville Department of Parks and Recreation announced that the Tonsler Park basketball courts and court lighting system upgrade is complete and the facilities are available for public use.

The upgrade reoriented two full-sized courts and rebuilt a third undersized court to full-sized dimensions. All three courts were funded in part through the generosity of the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation and now feature a state-of-the-art lighting system that is scheduled remotely and is highly energy efficient.

Court lights are automatically energized 30 minutes prior to sunset and can be activated for one hour of play by pressing a button on the light poles closest to the fence. At the :55 minute mark a strobe light on the pole will flash, giving patrons the opportunity to extend court illumination for another hour by re-pressing the button. At 10pm the lights will automatically shut off, with two poles remaining lit for an additional 10 minutes so patrons can exit the park safely.
