Grimes named I-AA All-America
William and Mary standout Jonathan Grimes has been selected as a first-team All-American by the Associated Press as an all-purpose player.
Grimes’ selection marks the third consecutive season that a Tribe player has garnered AP All-America honors, as punter David Miller (2010) and defensive end Adrian Tracy (2009) earned the distinction previously.
Honored as the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Special Teams Player of the Year, Grimes also earned first-team all-conference accolades as a running back and third-team distinction as a kick returner this fall. With the honors, he increased his career total of all-league awards to 11 and is now the most-decorated player in CAA history. Read more
W&M ranked #1 in preseason football mag
For the second-consecutive year, the William and Mary football team has garnered a preseason No. 1 national ranking by Phil Steele’s College Football Preview.
The Tribe returns 13 starters from last season’s squad that captured the Colonial Athletic Association title and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Playoffs, marking the program’s second-consecutive postseason berth.
In addition to the lofty ranking, the publication also selected four Tribe standouts as preseason All-Americans – running back Jonathan Grimes (first team), cornerback B.W. Webb (second team), linebacker Dante Cook (third team) and tight end Alex Gottlieb (fourth team). Joining the quartet on Steele’s preseason All-CAA First Team was defensive end Marcus Hyde and safety Brian Thompson, while center James Pagliaro, left tackle Mike Salazar and linebacker Jake Trantin all garnered preseason second-team all-league distinction.
The start of the 2011 season is rapidly approaching with the Tribe set to open its campaign at Virginia on Sept. 3. Game times for 10 of the Tribe’s 11 games have been announced and are available by clicking here. The kickoff time for the Old Dominion game should be available in the near future.
Tribe knocks off Longwood

Longwood University dropped a 6-1 baseball road decision at the College of William and Mary from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg.
The Lancers (22-13) fell behind 5-0 through six innings and could not recover against the Tribe (18-16). Senior captain Brant Jones|Richmond (Monacan) had two hits, including a double, while sophomore Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) had one hit and an RBI during the road setback to a team they had blanked a day earlier in Farmville (7-0).
#9 JMU women's lax wins in OT
The ninth-ranked James Madison women’s lacrosse team scored twice in overtime to pull out an 11-9 victory over number 17 William and Mary Sunday afternoon.
With the victory the Dukes maintained first place in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 3-0 league record. JMU upped its overall record to 9-2 as the Dukes won their third game in a row.
W&M has a 6-5 overall record and is 1-1 in conference play. Read more
Tribe upset by Georgia Southern in I-AA playoffs
Fourth-ranked W&M falls at home
The fourth-ranked and second-seeded William and Mary football team fell to No. 20/22 Georgia Southern, 31-15, in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs on Saturday afternoon at Zable Stadium.
The loss snapped W&M’s (8-4, 6-2) 11-game home winning streak, as the Tribe last lost at Zable Stadium in the 2008 season finale against Richmond.
Georgia Southern (9-4, 5-3) utilized at balanced rushing attack, as four players rushed for at least 60 yards and the squad combined to total 423 yards on the ground. It marked the most rushing yards recorded against the Tribe since Furman posted 509 in 1999. Read more
Football Roundup: Dukes win with goal-line stand, W&M pastes Richmond, VMI falls
James Madison’s defense kept Maine out of the end zone for all but the game’s initial series, including on a play from the three-yard line to end the contest, to lead the Dukes to a 14-10 victory Saturday in the season-finale for both football teams.
Maine pulled to within 14-10 early during the final quarter and ran 16 plays during the closing possession before JMU stopped a Black Bear receiver as time expired.

Rams rally in second half
On Saturday, in the Colonial Athletic Association opener, the Black & Gold did exactly that with a 59-55 victory over a hard-nosed William & Mary team in front of nearly 6,500 at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
“I’m proud of the way our team battled back after a tough first half and showed enough resolve to win against a good William & Mary team,” Smart said. “William & Mary is such a tough team to play against because of their style and to be able to come out with a win to start the conference year is always a positive.” Read more
