Tribe falls in CAA quarters

Following an impressive opening round win over James Madison at the CAA Tournament, the William and Mary men’s basketball team fell to Hofstra, 72-56, in the quarterfinals Saturday night. The Tribe, which led by two at halftime, could not overcome a second-half Hofstra run. Wearing the Green and Gold for the final time, senior forward Marcus Kitts led the Tribe with 10 points and eight rebounds. Tribe wins on Senior Night

The William and Mary men’s basketball team led wire-to-wire on the strength of strong free throw shooting in recording a 69-65 Senior Night victory over Georgia State at Kaplan Arena. The Green and Gold connected on 29-of-37 from the free throw line, including 80 percent (20-of-25) in the second half, and outrebounded a bigger Panther squad, 39-33, to pull out its second straight victory. W&M (9-20, 4-13 CAA) recognized the contributions of senior forward Marcus Kitts and senior student manager Lydia Dodson prior to their final home game against GSU (11-17, 6-11 CAA). W&M dominates Radford in BracketBusters

The William and Mary men’s basketball team used a balanced attack in recording its first ESPN BracketBuster win, dominating Big South foe Radford, 84-52, on Saturday night at Kaplan Arena. The Tribe jumped out to an early advantage and rolled to the easy the victory, placing five players in double figures and shooting better than 50 percent from the floor. W&M, who played in BracketBusters for the fifth straight season, improved to 8-20 on the year, while the Highlanders fell to 5-22.

Sophomore guard Matt Rum topped the Tribe with a career-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Junior forward Quinn McDowell tallied his second straight double-double as he notched 13 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Julian Boatner continued his torrid shooting from beyond the 3-point arc, knocking down four triples to finish with 12 points. Senior forward Marcus Kitts just missed a double-double with 10 points and seven rebounds to go along with four blocked shots, while freshman guard Brandon Britt scored 10 points and dished out a team-best five assists. Tribe falls to ODU

The William and Mary men’s basketball team fell at the hands of Old Dominion, 69-53, on Wednesday night at Kaplan Arena. The Monarchs, who shot 45.2 percent from the field and limited the Tribe to 38.6 percent shooting, used an early run in the second half to clinch the victory over the Green and Gold. W&M falls to 7-18 overall and 3-11 CAA action, while ODU improved to 19-6 on the season and 10-4 in league play.

Freshman Julian Boatner led the Tribe with 15 points with another impressive outside shooting performance, hitting on 5-of-6 from 3-point range. Junior forward Quinn McDowell and freshman guard Brandon Britt finished with 13 points each and also led the College with four assists apiece. William and Mary falls at UNCW

The William and Mary men’s basketball team came up on the short end of an offensive battle, falling at UNC Wilmington, 91-81, on Saturday night at Trask Coliseum. The Tribe shot 70.8 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, but the Seahawks hit on 60.8 percent for the game and used an early run in the second half to outdistance the College. Tribe upsets JMU

Dukes have dropped four of last six

Quinn McDowell scored 23 points and William and Mary had an answer for James Madison’s second-half charge, recording a 73-67 victory in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball game on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

W&M snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 7-16 overall, 3-9 in the CAA. The Tribe picked up just its second road win of the season (2-9) while also handing JMU just its second home loss (10-2). The Dukes fell to 17-7 overall, 7-5 in the league.

The Tribe used a key 11-0 first-half run to build a 14-point lead at 28-14. W&M led 35-21 at the half and was still up 15 at 39-24 with 17:33 to go before JMU made its push. Continue reading “Tribe upsets JMU” »

Tribe comes up short in nailbiter with Hofstra

In a back-and-forth contest, the William and Mary men’s basketball came up short, falling to CAA-leading Hofstra, 67-64, at Kaplan Arena on Saturday afternoon.

W&M led by three at the half, but trailed by one with under a minute remaining. The Tribe had a trio of chances to tie or take the lead, but could not find the right combination in snapping its two-game winning streak. The College fell to 6-13 overall and 2-6 in league play, while Hofstra improved to 13-6 on the year and 7-1 in CAA action.

Freshman guard Brandon Britt led the Tribe with 24 points, a career-high five rebounds and a team-best three assists. He was 7-of-15 from the floor, including a 5-of-9 effort from 3-point range, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

Sophomore forward Kyle Gaillard turned in a nice performance off the bench with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including a perfect 2-of-2 from 3-point range, to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Senior forward Marcus Kitts finished with seven points and seven rebounds for the Tribe.

Tribe downs Towson in CAA play

The William and Mary men’s basketball team secured its first road victory of the year Wednesday night in convincing fashion, 83-68, over Towson. Led by freshman guard Julian Boatner’s freshman-record tying six 3-pointers, the Green and Gold shot 55.8 percent from the floor and 51.8 percent from 3-point range in rolling past the Tigers. The Green and Gold won its second straight game, improving to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in CAA play, while TU fell to 4-13 on the year and 0-7 in league action. Tribe gets big CAA win over Drexel

Turning in its most complete performance of the season, the William and Mary men’s basketball led for nearly the entire game in surging to an 80-66 win over Drexel on Saturday night at Kaplan Arena.

Leading by one at the half, the Tribe shot a sizzling 76.5 percent from the field in the second half and compounded that with 20-of-25 from the free throw line in the final 20 minutes to outdistance the Dragons, who came into the game ranked among the national leaders in a number of defensive categories. JMU stuns William and Mary: 14-2 run pushes Dukes to CAA win

James Madison used a 14-2 run in the final 3:29 to turn a 77-70 deficit into an 84-79 victory over William and Mary in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball game Saturday night at Kaplan Arena at William and Mary Hall.

JMU improved to 13-3 overall and 3-1 in the CAA. The Dukes won their seventh in a row for their longest winning streak since the 1993-94 season and equaled their win total from last year (13-20) just 16 games into the season. JMU also won its fourth straight on the road for the first time since spanning the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. W&M lost its sixth in a row to drop to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in the CAA. JMU uses late run to pull away: Dukes knock off W&M

Five players scored in double figures and the James Madison (9-5, 2-0 CAA) women’s basketball team used a 19-8 run in the final 5:50 to fend off William and Mary (1-11, 0-2) 89-75 in Colonial Athletic Association action on Thursday night at Kaplan Arena.

Senior guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) scored a game-high 29 points and went 7-of-8 from the free throw line to break the JMU career record for made free throws (458), surpassing Lesley Dickinson’s (2003-07) record of 457. Struggles continue for W&M: Tribe loses on road at Delaware

The William and Mary men’s basketball fell on the road at Delaware, 61-48, on Wednesday night. The Green and Gold rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to take a 39-38 lead with 11:51 remaining, but the Blue Hens answered with a 14-2 run to pull out the win. W&M falls to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in CAA play, while Delaware improves to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in league action.

Senior forward Marcus Kitts led the Tribe with 11 points to go along with seven rebounds. Junior JohnMark Ludwick added nine points on a trio of 3-pointers to go along with four rebounds, while junior Quinn McDowell and freshmen Brandon Britt and Julian Boatner each scored seven points.
