VDOT awards $409,700 to City of Waynesboro for Safe Routes to School Program
The City of Waynesboro has received a $409,700 Safe Routes To School grant to make safety improvements near four schools.
The Safe Routes To School initiative is a federally funded program administrated by the Virginia Department of Transportation. It will provide the City of Waynesboro with funding for a total of eight infrastructure projects to construct sidewalks, crosswalks, curb ramps, walking paths, pedestrian lights, and traffic calming devices near Westwood Hills Elementary School, William Perry Elementary School, Wenonah Elementary School, and Kate Collins Middle School. Engineering for these projects should begin in fall 2012. Construction of these projects should start in 2013. Read more
McDonnell announces support and funding for Safe Routes to School
Gov. Bob McDonnell today announced the Virginia Department of Transportation awarded $5.9 million in Safe Routes to School funding to 18 communities across the Commonwealth for the 2012 SRTS grant cycle.
The funds will be used for projects that will make bicycling and walking to school safer and more appealing for students at 28 elementary and middle schools. Read more
Richmond’s funniest at WTA’s Gateway
Top comic Odyssey Michaels will head the lineup at the February Comedy Night at WTA’s Gateway on Saturday, Feb. 25.
Michaels was voted Richmond’s funniest comic in 2011 by Style Weekly Magazine. He has performed nationally, including being a featured performer at the Cincinnati Comedy Festival. He has also been seen on G4TV cable network. This will be his first visit to Waynesboro and WTA’s Gateway. Read more
WTA’s Gateway first Bluegrass Night
WTA’s Gateway will present its first evening devoted exclusively to traditional bluegrass music on Friday, Feb. 24. Featured will be Allegheny Blue and Blue Mountain Sunrise. Performance will begin at 8 p.m. at 329 West Main in Downtown Waynesboro.
Blue Mountain Sunrise has been playing to the enjoyment of Bluegrass and Bluegrass Gospel fans in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and beyond for over 30 years. The band’s current line-up includes two brothers who provide harmonious vocals. Roy Kiser (known by some as Danny) keeps time on the upright bass and Jeff Kiser holds his own with great licks and background work on the 5-string banjo. Darrell Weaver, the only original member band member, rips on the resophonic guitar. Brent Burkholder, the newest member works the guitar with good rhythm and leads. Band members have played in various Bluegrass and Gospel groups over the years and are seasoned veterans of the Bluegrass scene. Read more
Open Mic Night at the Gateway
The Open Mic Night has become a fixture on the fourth Thursday of the month at WTA’s Gateway.
With the guidance of Lorie Strother, the Dreaded Blues Lady, the evening provides a showcase for seasoned and novice performers who want the opportunity to preview their works before a local audience. Comics, poets, and musicians of all sorts have brought their talents to Gateway stage.
Shows are at 7 p.m. at WTA’s Gateway, 329 West Main in downtown Waynesboro. Admission is Pay-What-You-Will.
The program is open to all performers and all styles of entertainment. To reserve a spot on the show, performers need to call the WTA office at 540-943-9999. Remaining spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis on the night of the performances.

March: One Book, One Community. This year’s selection for the community wide book read is Walking Across Egypt by Clyde Edgarton. Free copies of the book are available while supplies last. A book display of southern writers will be on the main floor of the library throughout the month. WPL’s events will continue into April due to renovations.
Wednesday, March 21, 7-8 p.m.: Wednesday Night Book Club. Read thought-provoking books and participate in fascinating and far-ranging discussion with other book lovers. This month’s selection is Walking Across Egypt by Clyde Edgarton. This event is a part of the One Book One Community program.
Other programs will resume after renovations are finished.
Shenandoah Valley Art Center events: March 2012
The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of March, is exhibiting mixed media artwork by Milenko Katic. Katic was born in Serbia and grew up in Belgrade. He studied medicine for three years until he discovered his love for art. He studied drawing and painting with Professor Sergije Jovanovic’.
Dali and Magritte influenced his surrealistic style of work in the ’70s and ’80s. In 1979 he joined The Painting School of Machva with painter Milic’ de Machva and mounted group and solo exhibitions. In 1989 he moved to Charlottesville, and began selling and exhibiting his work at galleries and art shows in Virginia. Today his studio is in Afton, at the foot of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
