Lead gift builds strong foundation

SAW Habitat for Humanity announced today the largest gift given and 100 percent participation from the organization’s Board of Directors for the “What Will You Build” campaign that started today.

The challenge gift – just over $100,000 – was given by Tom Montgomery,  chairman of the board of SAW Habitat for Humanity and CEO of Old Colony Construction, and sets a standard in giving to provide resources to rehabilitate homes, restore communities, and build a 25-home community. DCCU sees steady loan growth in fourth quarter 2011

DuPont Community Credit Union continued to see steady loan growth for the fourth quarter for 2011 compared to the same period for 2010.

The Waynesboro-headquartered credit union, which operates 10 branches in the Central Shenandoah Valley region, reported that $46.5 million in loans were funded during the fourth quarter to bring the amount of total loansoutstanding to $579.5 million as of the end of the year. SMAC brings 65 kids to Virginia Y Champs

The Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club, which practices at the Waynesboro Y, competed in the Virginia Y Championships held in Lynchburg on Feb. 12.

The Virginia Y Champs is open to all YMCA teams in Virginia.  Y teams make up approximately 30 percent of the swimmers in the state.  There are numerous teams that operate out of a public pool and several that own and operate their own pool that do not practice at a Y.   Continue reading “SMAC brings 65 kids to Virginia Y Champs” »

MBC/CAPSAW partnership saves area tax filers $10,000 in two weeks

Local residents can receive valuable help at tax time this spring from CAPSAW’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.  Free tax preparation is available every Tuesday evening at Stuarts Draft  High School and Thursday nights through tax season at the Booker T. Washington Center on Johnson Street.

VITA programs provide IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers who work one-on-one with families and individuals to help file their tax returns and ensure that they receive the tax credits for which they qualify. Donaldson announces candidacy for City Council seat

City firefighter Robert “Bob” Donaldson has announced his intentions to run for the Ward B seat on City Council during the May 1 general election.

Donaldson is a lifelong resident of the City of Waynesboro. The FMS Advantage: Personal touch guides cadets on college path

A group of young men in military fatigues are amassed outside Dan Baranik’s office. He has test scores to share.

“I got a 90?” one said in obvious surprise.

His comrades didn’t do as well. One said he “still has some work to do.” The others focused their energies on the cadet with the high score.

“This is every day for me,” said Baranik, the guidance director at Fishburne Military School, whose mission, as the job title would suggest, is to guide cadets at FMS on to a path to a successful, productive adulthood.
