Senior Centers celebrate Christmas

Santa Claus was in town, and he saw a full house at the Waynesboro Senior Center on Wednesday.

WSC hosted a Christmas lunch for its members and members from sister Senior Centers in Staunton and Churchville.

The Centers hold similar mixers once a quarter, said Janice Gentry, the director of the Waynesboro Senior Center.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the members to be able to socialize with folks that they don’t get to see all that often,” Gentry said.

This year’s joint Christmas lunch was the first that the local Senior Centers have held together, said Gail Ham, the director of the Churchville Senior Center.

Close to 100 local seniors took part, with the lunch supplemented by entertainment and visits with Santa.

“You come here and get together, and you can mingle with everybody. I try to mingle with everybody, crack jokes. It’s nice. I enjoy it,” Waynesboro Senior Center member Larry Ransome said.

“I think it’s just wonderful that we’re all together. It’s the Christmas spirit that everyone should have at this time, love for one another, joy and celebrating Jesus’ birth. It’s just wonderful,” Staunton Senior Center member Marilyn McGonigal said.

SSC director Lynn Harris was all smiles seeing “so many people coming and enjoying themselves and singing and seeing Santa Claus and exchanging gifts.”

“It’s just been a great way to celebrate the holiday,” Harris said.

Picnic at Churchville Senior Center

The three area Senior Centers (Churchville, Staunton, and Waynesboro) like to get together periodically to enjoy special programs and fellowship with each other. It has become a tradition that the Churchville Senior Center hosts an Independence Day gathering for all of us because they are located in a park setting that is perfect for a summer picnic.

This year that event is going to be on June 30, a few days before the actual holiday. So the Waynesboro Center will be closed for on-site meals and programs on that day while we go celebrate with our friends from the other centers. We will also be closed for the actual holiday, July 4. Meals on Wheels will be delivered on June 30, while we’re at the picnic, but will not be delivered on Monday, July 4.

Waynesboro Senior Center Weekly Report

Some older adults living in Staunton, Augusta County, and Waynesboro will be able to receive free cooling devices this summer, thanks to the FAN CARE Program jointly sponsored by Valley Program for Aging Services (VPAS), Virginia Department for the Aging and Dominion Virginia Power Company. This program starts June 15 and ends September 30. The purpose of the Program is to provide portable fans and window air conditioning units to older adults whose health is threatened by the lack of a cooling device in the home.

To qualify for the program, individuals must be 60 years of age or older, have a heat-related situation at home which threatens their health, and have total household income at or less than $1,361 for a one person household, or $1,839 for a two person household. Distributed fans and a/c units become the property of the recipient and are available on a limited, first come, first served basis. A/C units are given to individuals who own their own home and who do not have an existing a/c unit in the home. Recipients must complete a short form attesting to household income, date of birth, and home ownership if requesting an a/c unit.

People interested in this program can come by the Center during normal business hours to fill out an application and, if qualified, pickup a fan. A/C unit applications require further approval and might require a second trip to pick up the unit.

Young at Heart

The Center will be closed on Tuesday, June 14 as the members go on a field trip. They will be traveling up to Camp Overlook, a United Methodist Church camp, in Keezletown.

The camp is preparing for a summer season of church camp weeks for children. They are staffed by college students from all over the world who come together for the summer to be camp counselors. Each year, just before the church camp season starts, the Camp holds “Young at Heart Days” where they have activities and programs for older persons. The members of the Center always enjoy this trip to the camp in the mountains, especially because the camp counselors are always so cheerful and helpful.

While the Center is closed for on-site lunch and programs that day, Meals on Wheels will still be delivered.
