VMI’s Baucom receives contract extension
VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom has received a contract extension through the 2016-2017 season, athletic director Donny White has announced.
Baucom recently guided the Keydets in 2011-12 to their third winning season over the last four years and an appearance in the Big South Championship final game for the third time over the last six seasons. VMI went 17-16 this past year while leading the league in home attendance. Baucom also moved past the career 100-win mark faster than any coach in VMI basketball history, reaching 104 victories this past season, giving him the best winning percentage of any coach in the school modern era and second most victories overall. Asheville ends VMI’s NCAA bid
No. 1 seed UNC Asheville placed five players in double figures and used a 20-12 run the final 10 minutes to pull away with an 80-64 win over No. 7 seed VMI and capture the 2012 Advance Auto Parts Big South Men’s Basketball Championship Saturday at Kimmel Arena. With the win, the Bulldogs win their second consecutive Big South Tournament title and receive the Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Asheville (24-9) is the League’s first back-to-back champion since Winthrop won four-straight from 2005-08, and is the first No. 1 seed to win the title since 2009. Read more
VMI upsets Winthrop, advances to Big South title game
The #7 VMI Keydets shot 53.2 percent from the field, including a perfect 6 of 6 from D.J. Covington, and advanced to the Championship Game of the 2012 Advance Auto Parts Big South Basketball Championship by defeating the #6 Winthrop Eagles, 75-55, Thursday night in Asheville, N.C.
Covington matched a season-high with 16 points, while Stan Okoye added a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. VMI (17-15) advances to its third Big South final in six years, and will bid for its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1977 in Saturday’s title game. VMI upsets Coastal in Big South tourney
Fueled by 14 three-pointers and a 57% field goal percentage, the #7 VMI Keydets upset the #2 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 85-68, in the quarterfinals of the Advance Auto Parts Big South Basketball Championship, contested Wednesday in Asheville, N.C. VMI squeaks past Radford in Big South Tourney
The #7 VMI Keydets defeated the #10 Radford Highlanders, 55-53, in a dramatic first round of the 2012 Advance Auto Parts Men’s Basketball Championship, Monday, Feb. 27 at Cameron Hall. The Keydets advance to Wednesday’s quarterfinals and will play No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina at 12:00 p.m. at UNC Asheville’s Kimmel Arena.
With 1:19 remaining, Radford’s (6-26) Johnathan Edwards split two free throws to pull the Highlanders within a point. The Keydets’ (15-15) Stan Okoye missed a jumper at the other end, and Radford had a chance to take the lead. Point guard R.J. Price drove into the lane, but a bounce pass attempt was intercepted by Okoye. The junior then made two free throws with 19 seconds remaining, making it a 54-51 game. Read more
Coastal Carolina tops VMI, 81-64
Junior guard Anthony Raffa scored 26 points to lead Coastal Carolina past VMI, 81-64, before a Senior Day crowd of 2,541 at Cameron Hall in Lexington.
VMI closed out the regular season 14-15 and 8-10 in Big South play and must wait out the rest of today’s league action to find out where it will open tournament play next week. Read more
VMI gets big win over Charleston Southern
Keith Gabriel had 31 points, Stan Okoye had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and the VMI Keydets used a 22-3 second half run to break open a close game and went to defeat the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, 90-81, in Big South basketball action Thursday night at Lexington’s Cameron Hall.
CSU (17-11, 10-7 Big South) got a career-high 31 points and 11 rebounds from Kelvin Martin, and he tied the game with a baseline slam early in the second half. From there, the Keydets (14-14, 8-9) launched a 22-3 run, one that included nine points by Gabriel and three-pointers on three straight possessions early in the spurt. When it concluded on an Okoye three-point play at 13:59, the Keydets had a 59-40 edge, and VMI made eight of 10 free throws down the stretch en route to its 12th win at home this season.
