#3 UNC ends #14 UVa. women lax season

The No. 3 North Carolina Tar Heels ended the No. 14 Virginia women’s lacrosse team’s run for the 2011 NCAA title Saturday afternoon, handing the Cavaliers a 15-7 loss at Fetzer Field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. With the loss, Virginia ends the season with a 9-9 record, while North Carolina (14-5) advances to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament to face sixth–seeded Loyola.

Today’s game opened identically to the Cavaliers’ regular season contest against the Tar Heels at Fetzer Field on March 12 (UVa lost, 8-7). But following one hour and 38 minutes of a weather delay, the Tar Heels scattered five goals throughout 10 minutes of play to take a commanding 13-4 advantage and never looked back. UVa. women's lax faces UNC in NCAAs

The Virginia women’s lacrosse team earned an at-large bid to the 2011 NCAA Tournament Sunday evening and will travel to third-seeded North Carolina for a first round game. The Cavaliers (9-8) will be unseeded and will face the Tar Heels (13-5) for the third time this year. Game day and time will be determined later.

The at-large bid marks the 16th-straight year that Virginia has participated in the NCAA Tournament, and 22nd overall. The Cavaliers hold an all-time record of 29-20 in the postseason and have played the second-most tournament games among any other team in the nation. #5 Northwestern outlasts UVa. women's lax

The No. 11 Virginia women’s lacrosse team closed out its regular season Saturday afternoon, dropping an 8-4 contest to No. 5 Northwestern at Klöckner Stadium. The game was evenly matched throughout, with four tied scores, before Northwestern used a four-goal streak in the final six minutes to close out the game. JMU women's lax holds off UVa.

No. 12 James Madison survived a late-game flurry of goals by 11th-ranked Virginia and came away with a 16-14 win in women’s lacrosse Wednesday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.

The Dukes (13-3) never trailed in the contest but Virginia (9-7) would not go away.

No. 4 UNC earns lopsided victory over No. 10 Virginia in ACC Quarterfinals, 16-5

The third-seeded and fourth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels earned its most lopsided victory in series history over the sixth-seeded and 10th-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team Thursday night, 16-5, in the first round of the 2011 ACC Tournament at WakeMed Soccer Park.

# 11 Virginia women's lax wins at Mason

The No. 11 Virginia women’s lacrosse team used 12 second-half goals to erase an even 2-2 halftime score and earn a 14-7 victory over in-state rival George Mason Wednesday night. With the win, the Cavaliers move to 5-0 against teams from Virginia this year and 9-5 overall. The loss drops the Patriots to 3-10 this season.

Junior Josie Owen led Virginia with a career-high five scores, while classmate Julie Gardner tacked on three goals and one assist. Freshman Dana Boyle had two scores for the Cavaliers, while sophomores Annie Thomas and Caroline McTiernan, in addition to freshmen Christie Donovan and Katie Slater, each had one goal. #11 UVa. women's lax defeats Virginia Tech

The No. 11 Virginia women’s lacrosse team held off an eight-goal second-half rally by its in-state rival Virginia Tech Wednesday evening at Klöckner Stadium to earn its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season, 12-10. With the win, the Cavaliers bump their all-time record against the Hokies to 17-0 and move to 9-5 this season and 1-4 in the ACC. Virginia Tech falls to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Junior Charlie Finnigan led all players in the contest with seven points on a game-high four goals and three assists, while classmate Julie Gardner tacked on three goals and one assist. The hat trick marks the 16th of Finnigan’s career, while it also stretches the England native’s goal-scoring streak to 15-straight games. #7 'Hoos win women's lax match with Harvard

Four Cavaliers notched hat tricks for the No. 7 Virginia women’s lacrosse team Sunday afternoon, as the Cavaliers defeated Harvard in a high scoring affair, 19-18. Virginia fought off a late five-goal rally from the Crimson that evened the score at 17, before scoring two of the games final three goals to earn the victory. With the win, Virginia bumps to 7-5 on the season, while Harvard falls to 4-4.

Juniors Ainsley Baker, Charlie Finnigan and Josie Owen each notched four goals on the day, while sophomore Annie Thomas tied a career-high with three scores. Finnigan tacked on two assists for a game-high six points, while Owen, Baker and junior Julie Gardner each had five points. Gardner scored two goals and tacked on two assists. #7 UVa. women's lax falls at BC

A slow start plagued the No. 7 Virginia women’s lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon as it dropped a 12-6 contest at No. 19 Boston College. The win marks the first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season for the Eagles (6-5, 1-3 ACC) and the first-ever over Virginia. The Cavaliers fall to 6-5 this season and 0-4 in the league.

Virginia was led by junior Charlie Finnigan’s three goals – the 14th hat trick of her career. Sophomore Caroline McTiernan tacked on two scores for Virginia, while junior Josie Owen had the remaining goal. Junior Julie Gardner, sophomore Annie Thomas and Owen were credited for one assist. UVa. women's lax loses at #3 Duke

The No. 3 Duke women’s lacrosse team used three-straight goals midway through the second half to erase an even 6-6 score and hold on for an 11-8 victory over No. 8 Virginia Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic Coast Conference game played at Klöckner Stadium. UVa-JMU women's lax game halted by lightning, will be replayed

The No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse team’s game at No. 10 James Madison Wednesday was stopped in progress due to inclement weather. The game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 27 at 7 p.m., at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.

Lightning in the area stopped play at the 4:11 mark of the first half with the score tied at 5-5. On the makeup date, the game will be restarted from the beginning and all results from tonight’s contest will not count.

The Cavaliers (5-3) will be back in action this weekend as they host No. 3 Duke Saturday at Klöckner Stadium. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m.

#8 UVa. women's lax storms back to beat #16 W&M

The No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse team erased a seven-goal second-half deficit against No. 16 William and Mary Wednesday night at Klockner Stadium, en route to a 14-13 victory. Down 12-5 with 25:23 to play, the Cavaliers scored nine of the game’s final 10 goals to improve to 15-1 against their in-state rival under head coach Julie Myers.

Virginia (4-3) was led by its junior attackers – Ainsley Baker, Charlie Finnigan, Julie Gardner and Josie Owen – all of whom have scored in every game for the Cavaliers this season. Owen led the way with four goals and one assist, while Finnigan notched four goals. Baker tacked on two goals and a career-high three assists, while Gardner also tallied two goals and three assists.
