Late spurt pushes #23 UNC past UVa. women

Virginia fell on the road to No. 23 North Carolina, 64-56, on Friday (Feb. 3). Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) led all scorers with 21 points and tallied her 500th-career rebound for the Cavaliers.

The loss dropped Virginia’s record to 16-8 overall and 4-6 in ACC play. North Carolina improved to 17-5 overall and 7-2 in league play.

Moorer was 7-of-14 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Entering the contest with 498 rebounds, she tallied four during the contest to up her career total to 502. Moorer led all players with six steals. Read more

UVa. women fall at Georgia Tech, 63-53

The Virginia women’s basketball team dropped an Atlantic Coast Conference contest on the road Wednesday (Jan. 25), falling 63-53 to Georgia Tech at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Ga.

The loss dropped UVa’s record to 15-7 overall and 3-5 in league play. Georgia Tech, receiving votes in the Associated Press top 25 and ranked No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll, improved to 15-6 (5-3 ACC). Read more

UVa. women get bounceback win over BC

Behind 21 points from sophomore guard Ataira Franklin, the Virginia women’s basketball team beat Boston College 69-58 Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena. Franklin (Bowie, Md.) was one of four Cavaliers in double figures.

Virginia improved to 15-6 overall and 3-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Boston College fell to 5-14 and 0-6 in the league.

Junior guard Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) had a solid night with 13 points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists. Junior forward Telia McCall (Marietta, Ga.) added 12 points off the bench while senior forward Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) chipped in 11 points and matched Gerson with a game-best eight boards. #11 Miami holds off UVa. women, 56-53

The Virginia women’s basketball team was defeated, 56-53, by No. 11 Miami at John Paul Jones Arena on Thursday (Jan. 19) night. Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) scored 18 points as Virginia’s leading scorer.

The loss dropped the Cavaliers’ record to 14-6 overall and 2-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Miami improved to 16-3 overall and 5-1 in league play.

Hurricane guard Shenise Johnson scored 20 points and hit a pair of free throws with 18.2 seconds left to lift Miami to the victory.

The Cavaliers had two chances to tie on their final possession, but Moorer missed a 3-pointer with five seconds left and a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer from Jazmin Pitts (Mosely, Va.) from the corner did not reach the basket. Read more

UVa. women fall at #8 Maryland, 68-61

The Virginia women’s basketball team fell on the road at eighth-ranked Maryland, 68-61, Monday (Jan. 16) at Comcast Center. Junior guard Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) was one of four UVa scorers in double figures, scoring 15 points.

Virginia’s record went to 14-5 overall and 2-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Maryland remained unbeaten at home and improved to 17-1 overall (4-1 ACC).

Gerson finished 6-for-15 from the field and knocked down three 3-pointers. She added four steals and three assists for Virginia. Read more

UVa. women win on the road at Clemson

Simone Egwu (Odenton, Md.) had her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Virginia women’s basketball team to a 54-47 victory at Clemson on Sunday (Jan. 8).

The victory improved Virginia’s overall record to 13-4 (1-2 ACC) and gave Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle her first Atlantic Coast Conference win.

With the loss, Clemson dropped to 4-10 on the year (0-3 ACC).

Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) added 13 points and seven rebounds for Virginia. Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) scored 10 points and had four steals. Read more

UVa. women fall to #25 UNC in 2 OTs

Virginia dropped a 78-73 double-overtime contest to No. 25 North Carolina Thursday (Jan. 5) at John Paul Jones Arena. Cavalier sophomore guard Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.) scored a career-high 29 points and added nine boards to lead UVa in scoring and rebounding.

With the loss, Virginia dropped to 12-4 overall and 0-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. North Carolina handed UVa its first home loss of the season and improved to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Franklin was 9-of-25 from the field and 9-of-9 from the free throw line. She connected on two 3-pointers and also added five steals. Read more
