No. 6 Duke eliminates No. 10 UVa in the ACC Men's Lacrosse Tournament

The No. 6 Duke Blue Devils (11-4) used a 7-1 second quarter run to eliminate the No. 10 Virginia Cavaliers (8-5) from the ACC Tournament on Saturday night, 19-10, inside Koskinen Stadium. Top-seeded Duke advances to the ACC Tournament final on Sunday against No. 3 seed Maryland.

“We just couldn’t get the ball cleared in the second quarter,” Virginia head coach Dom Starsia said. “We were scrambling a little bit in the defensive end.”

The contest started out well in UVa’s favor. Colin Briggs scored 1:23 into the contest on a fast break giving UVa the quick 1-0 advantage. After Duke’s Josh Offit scored unassisted at 11:30 in the first quarter, Rob Emery pushed UVa up a goal again, 2-1, with a score at 7:06. Read more

#7 UVa. men's lax falls at #10 Duke

Colin Briggs scored a career-high four goals, but it wasn’t enough as the No. 7 Virginia Cavaliers (8-4, 1-2 ACC) fell to the No. 10 Duke Blue Devils (10-4, 3-0 ACC) on Saturday, 13-11, inside Koskinen Stadium. The hat trick for Briggs was his second straight.

Shamel Bratton etched his name in UVa history with two points (1 goal, 1 assist), tying former teammate Brian Carroll for No. 1 all-time among UVa midfielders with 128 career points.

Briggs started things quickly for UVa when he scored in transition off a Chris Clements pass 1:30 into the game, giving the Cavaliers the 1-0 lead to start things off. Read more

Maryland stuns #6 UVa. men's lax

The No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers (7-3, 0-1 ACC) received two goals apiece from Rhamel Bratton and Chris Bocklet, but it wasn’t enough as the No. 10 Maryland Terrapins (7-2, 1-2 ACC) were victorious in front of 10,545 fans on Saturday, 12-7, inside Scott Stadium. The contest was UVa’s first inside the football stadium since 1995.

Virginia has back-to-back losses for the first time since the 2007 season, and back-to-back regular season losses for the first time since the 2004 season. Read more

#2 UVa. men's lax upset by Johns Hopkins

Steele Stanwick had three goals and four assists for the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers (7-2), but it wasn’t enough as the No. 11 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (6-2) broke a six-game losing streak to UVa with a 12-11 triumph on Saturday afternoon, inside Homewood Field.

Johns Hopkins captured the Doyle Smith Cup for the first time in the trophy’s six-year existence. Starting with the 2006 season, the regular season winner of the Virginia and Johns Hopkins matchup gets to keep the cup. Read more

#2 UVa. slips past #20 Ohio State

Rhamel Bratton and Steele Stanwick scored four goals apiece and Chris Bocklet added three scores to pace the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers (7-1) to a 14-11 triumph over the No. 20 Ohio State Buckeyes (5-3), Saturday afternoon, inside Klöckner Stadium. The victory is the 100th all-time in UVa’s home venue, which opened in 1993. The Cavaliers are now 100-16 (.862) all-time inside the confines of Klöckner Stadium.

With the victory, Virginia head coach Dom Starsia owns 323 career wins, needing four more to pass Jack Emmer (326) for the most triumphs while coaching at a NCAA Division I school. Read more

Briggs paces #2 UVa to win over #14 Cornell

Colin Briggs scored three goals to pace No. 2 Virginia (6-1) to an 11-9 triumph over the No. 14 Cornell Big Red (3-2) on Saturday afternoon, in front of 17,057 in the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic, inside M&T Bank Stadium. Inside Lacrosse named Briggs the MVP of the game.

With the victory, Virginia head coach Dom Starsia owns 322 career wins, needing five more to pass Jack Emmer (326) for the most triumphs while coaching at a NCAA Division I school. Read more

#2 UVa. men's lax romps over Vermont

Shamel Bratton tied a career high with five goals and added an assist for a career-best six points, leading the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers (5-1) to a 14-6 triumph over the Vermont Catamounts (3-2), Tuesday night, inside Klöckner Stadium. Colin Briggs also had a career night with three goals and four total points in the triumph.

Virginia goalie Adam Ghitelman added to his career win total, pushing him into a tie for the all-time ACC mark of 42 victories. The current ACC mark is held by Duke’s Dan Loftus, who accomplished the feat over five seasons from 2004-08. Ghitelman and Loftus now share the No. 7 all-time mark among NCAA Division I goalies.
