UVa. men’s lax get #5 seed in NCAAs, face Princeton in first round

No. 8 Virginia has received a bid to the 2012 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship as the No. 5 seed and will host the Princeton Tigers in the first round on Sunday (May 13) at 1 p.m., inside Klöckner Stadium.

The game will be televised on ESPN. This marks the fifth season (1974, 1981, 1993 and1994) where Virginia was seeded as the tournament’s No. 5 team. The last two times it happened were head coach Dom Starsia’s first two seasons in Charlottesville. Read more

UVa. lax advances to national-title game

The No. 7 seeded Virginia Cavaliers (12-5) rode hat tricks from Chris Bocklet, Mark Cockerton and Steele Stanwick en route to an NCAA semifinal round victory over the No. 6 seeded Denver Pioneers (15-3), 14-8, on Saturday afternoon in front of 45,039 fans inside M&T Bank Stadium. UVa advances to the championship game for the first time since 2006, when the Cavaliers won it all, and for the ninth time in program history.

Virginia will play the unseeded Maryland Terrapins, who defeated the No. 5 seed Duke Blue Devils in the second semifinal game, 9-4. The game will be the first NCAA finals between two ACC teams since 1986 (UNC over UVa in OT, 10-9). Faceoff on Championship Monday is set for 3:30 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN in HD.     Behind seven points by Steele Stanwick, the No. 7 seeded Virginia Cavaliers (11-5) stormed past the No. 2 seeded Cornell Big Red (14-3) in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament, 13-9, in front of 13,447 fans inside Hofstra’s James M. Shuart Stadium. The win gives Virginia head coach Dom Starsia 327 career victories, passing coaching legend Jack Emmer for the most head coaching wins at the Division I level.

    UVa advances to its fourth straight Final Four weekend at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium and will play No. 6 seed Denver on Saturday.     Tewaaraton finalist Steele Stanwick found Matt White for the game-winning goal with 2:33 left in overtime to push the No. 7 seeded Virginia Cavaliers (10-5) over the unseeded Bucknell Bison (14-3) on Sunday, 13-12, inside Klöckner Stadium in the NCAA Tournament first round.

    UVa. men's lax hosts Bucknell in NCAA Tournament

    No. 9 Virginia has received a bid to the 2011 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship as the No. 7 seed and will host the Bucknell Bison in the first round on Sunday (May 15) at 3 p.m., inside Klöckner Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPNU. This marks the second season (1971 and 2011) where Virginia was seeded as the tournament’s No. 7 team. The first time also happened to be the very first NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament in 1971. It is Virginia’s lowest seed since 2001 when they were seeded No. 8.

    Virginia, ranked No. 10 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media and No. 9 in the USILA coaches polls, enter the NCAA Tournament with a 9-5 overall mark. Bucknell, ranked No. 11 in both the coaches and media polls, earns the automatic bid for winning the Patriot League and enters the NCAA Tournament with a 14-2 record and winners of eight-straight games.     Steele Stanwick matched his career high with five assists to lead the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers (9-5) to a Senior Day win over the No. 13 Penn Quakers (8-5) on Saturday afternoon, 11-2, inside Klöckner Stadium.
