Second-half run pushes #5 UNC over UVa.
Senior forward Tyler Zeller scored a game-high 25 points and had nine rebounds to lead North Carolina to a 70-52 victory over Virginia Saturday afternoon (Feb. 11) at the Dean E. Smith Center.
Sophomore forward Harrison Barnes scored 14 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Tar Heels and junior forward John Henson scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds,
Senior forward Mike Scott scored 18 points for Virginia and also had six rebounds. Junior guard Jontel Evans added 12 points and five assists for the Cavaliers. Read more
Hultzen makes significant donation to UVa. baseball program
Danny Hultzen, a former three-time All-American at Virginia and currently a pitcher in the Seattle Mariners’ organization, has made a $100,000 commitment to the baseball program for improvements to UVa’s Davenport Field. Hultzen was selected second overall in the 2011 MLB Draft by the Mariners.
“I am thrilled and honored to contribute back to the Virginia baseball program,” Hultzen said. “Virginia has done so much for me. My experiences at UVa have been critical in helping me grow into the player and the man that I am today, and I would not be where I am without my time there. I had an amazing experience at Virginia, and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to give back to UVa and help the program and its players remain among the best in college baseball.” Read more
#19 UVa. blasts Wake Forest, 68-44
A three-pointer by Malcolm Brogdon ignited a 26-2 Virginia run, and the #19 ‘Hoos raced past Wake Forest for an easy 68-44 win Wednesday night.
Mike Scott was a perfect 9-for-9 from the floor to pace UVa. (19-4, 6-3 ACC) with 19 points. Joe Harris scored 11 points, and Brogdon, Jontel Evans and Akil Mitchell had 10 each for the Cavaliers, who led by as many as 33 points in the second half. Read more
UVa. women hold on for 55-47 win at NC State
The Virginia women’s basketball team earned a key road victory at NC State, 55-47, Sunday (Feb. 5) afternoon. Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.) scored a game-high 20 points and Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
With the victory, UVa improved to 17-8 overall and 5-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. NC State’s record went to 14-10 (4-7 ACC).
UVa scored eight unanswered points to open the game and held NC State scoreless until the 11:28 mark of the first half. At that point, Emili Tasler hit a jumper at the elbow to put the Wolfpack on the board and make the score 8-2. Read more
ACC-leading Florida State nips #16 UVa.
A 14-0 run gave Virginia a one-point lead late, but a long three by Michael Snaer gave Florida State the cushion it needed in a 58-55 win on Saturday in Tallahassee.
#16 UVa. (18-4, 5-3 ACC) had two chances in the final minute to tie it, but Joe Harris and Sammy Zeglinski missed three-pointers. A Malcolm Brogdon three with 2.7 seconds left brought the Cavs back within three, and then Snaer missed the front end of a one-and-one.
Mike Scott rebounded the miss, but Virginia was not able to get a shot off at the end. Read more
Cavs hold on to best Clemson, 65-61
Mike Scott capped another big night with four free throws in the final 16.8 seconds, and 16th-ranked Virginia held on for a 65-61 win over Clemson Tuesday.
Scott had 23 points and 10 rebounds for Virginia (18-3, 5-2 ACC), and Joe Harris added 19 points for the Cavs, who led by 10 at 56-46 with 6:56 to go on Harris’ fifth three-pointer of the night. But Clemson (11-10, 3-4 ACC) wouldn’t go away quietly, holding Virginia to a lone field goal in the final 6:56.
A Devin Booker three pulled the Tigers to within three at 61-58 with 1:01 to go. After Sammy Zeglinski missed a three with 23 seconds left, Clemson called timeout and ran a play for Andre Young, who missed an open three with 18 seconds left. Read more
UVa. women top Florida State, 62-52
The Virginia women’s basketball team defeated Florida State, 62-52, Sunday (Jan. 29) at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers improved to 16-7 overall and 4-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Virginia improved to 12-2 at home this season and topped the Seminoles for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
Florida State’s record went to 12-11 (4-5 ACC).
Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) was the Cavaliers’ leading scorer for the seventh time this season, netting 15 points. She added four rebounds and two assists. Read more
UVa. holds on for 61-60 win at NC State
Senior forward Mike Scott scored a game-high 18 points and senior guard Sammy Zeglinski and sophomore guard Joe Harris each scored 12 points to lead the Virginia men’s basketball team to a 61-60 victory over NC State in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at the RBC Center Saturday night (Jan. 28).
A three-point attempt by NC State sophomore guard Lorenzo Brown missed with one second left in the game.
The victory improves UVa’s overall record to 17-3 and the Cavaliers are now 4-2 in the ACC. It was Virginia’s fourth consecutive win over NC State. Read more
UVa. bounces back, bests Boston College, 66-49
#21 Virginia got 18 points from Mike Scott and two big late threes from senior guard Sammy Zeglinski to pull away from pesky Boston College to post a 66-49 win Thursday night.
UVa. (16-3, 3-2 ACC) led 31-23 at the break and pushed the lead to 11 on an early second-half three by Joe Harris. BC (7-13, 2-4 ACC) rallied to tie the game at 44 on a three from the left corner by Danny Rubin with 10:29 left.
The Cavs’ vaunted defense took over from there, limiting the Eagles to just a pair of field goals over the final 10:29, the second coming in garbage time when Ryan Anderson hit a turnaround jumper from the left elbow with 26 seconds left. Read more

They say things like, Throw the records of these two teams out the window when they get together, because they’re bitter rivals.
Throw the records out and everything else when Virginia and Virginia Tech get together.
OK, so Tech’s 47-45 win on Sunday came in a game that you could also say set basketball back a few decades.
Seth Greenberg, whose team had come in 0-4 in the ACC and seemed on the verge of an ugly implosion after blowing an eight-point second-half lead at home against North Carolina on Thursday, will take it nonetheless. Read more
Hokies upset #15 UVa., 47-45
Junior guard Erick Green scored 15 points and senior guard Dorenzo Hudson had 12 points to lead Virginia Tech to a 47-45 win over Virginia in an Atlantic Coast Conference game Sunday night (Jan. 22) at John Paul Jones Arena.
The loss was the first of the season at home for UVa and ended a 10-game winning streak for the Cavaliers at JPJA. Virginia is now 15-3 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.
Virginia is ranked 15th in the latest Associated Press poll and 17th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll.
Senior forward Mike Scott, junior guard Jontel Evans and sophomore guard Joe Harris each scored 10 points for the Cavaliers. Harris had seven rebounds and Scott six.
The win improved Virginia Tech’s record to 12-7 and the Hokies are now 1-4 in the ACC. Read more
Injury puts UVa. center on shelf for six weeks
Senior center Assane Sene (Saint-Louis, Senegal) of the Virginia men’s basketball team is expected to be out approximately six weeks after undergoing surgery on his right ankle Friday (Jan. 20).
The 7-0 Sene injured the ankle late in the first half of the Cavaliers’ victory over Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Thursday (Jan. 19). X-rays on Friday showed a fracture and Sene underwent surgery.
“Assane is a senior and an integral part of our team,” said Virginia head coach Tony Bennett. “In all my years of coaching, he is one of the most team-first players I’ve been around. I know he’ll do whatever he can from a rehabilitation standpoint to try and return to action before the end of the season.”
Sene has started all 17 games for Virginia this season. He is averaging 4.9 points and 3.7 rebounds a game and leads the team in blocked shots with 15. He is tied for sixth on Virginia’s career list for blocked shots with 108.
