Team-rules violation ends Sene’s season

Senior center Assane Sene (Saint-Louis, Senegal) of the Virginia men’s basketball team will not play for the Cavaliers again this season, UVa head coach Tony Bennett announced on Monday (March 5).

“Assane remains a member of our team, but even if he is physically able he will not play in games again this season because of a violation of team rules,” Bennett said. “As I have said previously, we have expectations for the players in our program. Read more

UVa. gets key road win to keep NCAA hopes alive

Mike Scott really wants to play in an NCAA Tournament.

The senior scored a career-high 35 points, including seven in overtime, to lead Virginia to a tough 75-72 win at Maryland in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The win improves UVa. to 22-8 overall and 9-7 in the ACC and clinches the fourth seed for the Cavs in next week’s ACC Tournament. The victory also solidifies Virginia’s NCAA Tournament resume, which had been on shaky footing following back-to-back home losses to North Carolina and Florida State. Read more

Maryland eliminates UVa. women from ACC Tourney

The Virginia women’s basketball team fell to sixth-ranked and third-seeded Maryland, 70-58, in the quarterfinals of the 2012 ACC Tournament on Friday (March 2) at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Virginia, the No. 6 seed at the tournament, now has an overall record of 22-10. The loss snapped a four-game Cavalier winning streak. Maryland improved to 26-4 overall and advanced to the semifinals to face Wake Forest. Read more

Dagger? #22 FSU stuns UVa. in final second

Ian Miller’s fifth three-pointer of the game broke a tie and pushed #22 Florida State to an improbable 63-60 win at Virginia Thursday night.

The loss was the second in a row at home and the fourth in seven games overall for UVa., which has gone from NCAA Tournament rock to the bubble with the late-season skid.

The ‘Hoos need a win on Sunday at Maryland in their regular-season finale and likely at least one win in next week’s ACC Tournament to finalize their NCAA resume. Read more

UVa. women knock off Florida State

In the regular-season finale for both teams, Virginia defeated Florida State, 66-57. Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) scored 23 points to lead four Cavaliers that scored in double figures.

With the win, Virginia improved to 21-9 overall and finished the regular-season with a 9-7 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference action. Florida State’s record dropped to 14-16 overall and 6-10 in league play. Read more

UVa. women rally to beat Wake

The Virginia women’s basketball team defeated Wake Forest, 61-55, in the final regular-season home game for seniors Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) and Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.).

Each senior reached a milestone, as Shine recorded her1,000th career point and Moorer moved into 20th place on Virginia’s all-time scoring list (1,170 points). Read more

Cavs face Oregon after exam break

Oregon comes to Charlottesville for a Friday-night TV tilt with Virginia with a 7-3 record that includes a narrow loss to Missouri and a blowout loss to Duke. More on UVa. coach Tony Bennett’s mind is that the Ducks have played two games since the ‘Hoos last played back on Dec. 7.
