UVa., JMU to square off in WNIT on Sunday

The Virginia women’s basketball team will play on the road at James Madison for its quarterfinal Women’s National Invitation Tournament contest on Sunday (March 25) at 2 p.m.

Virginia (25-10) is playing in the WNIT quarterfinals for the fifth time in school history (1980, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2012). The Cavaliers advanced to the semifinals in 1980. Read more

UVa. women advance in WNIT

The Virginia women’s basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament with a 74-58 victory over Appalachian State Thursday (March 22) at John Paul Jones Arena.

With the victory, Virginia improved to 25-10 overall and 17-3 at home this season. The Cavaliers reached the 25-win mark for the first time since the 1999-2000 season when that team finished with a 25-9 record. Read more

UVa. women top Richmond in WNIT

The Virginia women’s basketball team defeated in-state foe Richmond, 68-55, Monday (March 19) in the second round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Cavaliers advance to host Appalachian State in the third round on Thursday (March 22) at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.

With the win, UVa improved to 24-10 overall on the season and 16-3 at JPJA. Richmond concluded its season with a 23-9 record. Read more

Florida blows out UVa. in NCAAs

Freshman guard Bradley Beal had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore guard/forward Casey Prather scored 14 points to lead Florida to a 71-45 victory over Virginia in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament at the CenturyLink Center Omaha on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore forward center Patric Young added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Gators. Read more

UVa. women beat Howard in WNIT in OT

The Virginia women’s basketball team advanced to the second round of the 2012 Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) with a 59-56 victory over Howard in overtime on Thursday (March 15) night at John Paul Jones Arena. Virginia moves on to host in-state foe Richmond on Monday (March 19) at 7 p.m.

With the victory, Virginia improved to 23-10 overall and 15-3 at home this season. Howard finished its season with a 24-9 record.

Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) was the Cavaliers’ leading scorer with 18 points. The junior guard finished 6-for-17 from the field, connected on two 3-pointers and wasclutch from the free throw line (4-for-4). She added seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Read more

UVa. falls to N.C. State, now awaits NCAA fate

Sophomore forward C.J. Leslie scored 19 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds to lead NC State to a 67-64 victory over Virginia in a quarterfinal game in the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament Friday afternoon (March 9) at Philips Arena.

Leslie made nine of 11 field goal attempts in the game.

Sophomore guard Lorenzo Brown had 15 points and a game-high eight assists for the Wolfpack and junior forward Richard Howell added 10 points. Read more

Virginia Basketball: Brogdon to miss remainder of season

Freshman guard Malcolm Brogdon (Norcross, Ga.) of the Virginia men’s basketball team will miss the remainder of the 2011-12 season because of a foot injury, Virginia head coach Tony Bennett announced on Tuesday (March 6).

Brogdon has a broken bone in his left foot and will undergo surgery on Wednesday (March 7). His rehabilitation period is uncertain. Read more
