Tom Perriello: Small-business growth key to jumpstarting the economy

After so many months of tough economic news, it has been encouraging in recent weeks to see good news about jobs in our communities and a new attitude in Washington. In recent weeks, Congress has passed important legislation to support American manufacturing jobs, including bills I co-sponsored to eliminate our trade deficit, create the first national manufacturing strategy, and close the ridiculous loopholes that reward companies that outsource jobs.

We are also on the verge of passing a bill to slam China for manipulating its currency to choke out American products, including important steel manufacturing in Southern Virginia.

Perriello passes $2M mark in fundraising in ’10 cycle

The Tom Perriello campaign raised more than $660,000 in the second quarter of 2010, bringing its total to date in the 2009-2010 election cycle to $2.3 million.

The numbers released today by the campaign of the Fifth District Democrat also included a line item for $1.7 million in cash on hand.

The fundraising haul is made more impressive by the move of Perriello to reject monies from federal lobbyists and corporate PACs. Ninety-eight percent of the campaign monies contributed to Perriello in the second quarter came from individual donors.

“We are humbled by the outpouring of support from thousands of Virginians who have sent in $10 and $20 donations to support Tom’s re-election bid,” campaign manager Lise Clavel said. “They know that Tom is working the double shift he promised to bring back jobs and economic relief for working families. Our campaign is in the strong position it is today because of the incredible enthusiasm and generosity of Virginians who are excited to have a congressman that fights for them, not the special interests.”

Tom Perriello: The facts on health-care reform

Column by Tom Perriello

One of the top concerns of working families and small businesses in the Fifth District is the skyrocketing cost of health care and the lack of access to quality, affordable care. Over the past 15 months, I have heard countless stories from Virginians about their struggles with the current health care system. Small business owners tell me they have to choose between insuring their workers or laying people off. Self-employed workers talk about their premiums have jumped 20% in just one year. Individuals with pre-existing conditions like diabetes say they can’t get health coverage. And the uninsured tell me stories—sometimes heart-breaking—about a disease that went unchecked or a trip to the emergency room after it was too late, all because they did not have health insurance. A conservative’s take on the Fifth

Former candidate blogs, talks up congressional race

Story by Chris Graham

Republicans can knock off freshman Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello in November, but it won’t be easy.

The assumption among some on the right is that Perriello won in 2008 on the coattails of Barack Obama, but as Internet-radio host Bradley Rees points out, John McCain beat Obama in the presidential voting in the Fifth by a healthy margin, “and yet Tom Perriello still won by 727 votes.”

Rees is a former candidate for the GOP nomination in the Fifth who is now devoting his energies to covering the race as a blogger and podcaster with a right-of-center perspective. A focal point for Rees, as he detailed in an interview on The AFP Show podcast on Monday, is moving the Republican Party nomination race to the right, a tall task with moderate State Sen. Robert Hurt appearing to be in the driver’s seat at this point. Continue reading “A conservative’s take on the Fifth” »

Staff Report
News tips: freepress2@ntelos.net

The Obama administration on Tuesday released plans for a Small Business Lending Fund that will transfer $30 billion from the Troubled Asset Relief Program to a new program supporting small-business lending.

The Fund would divert resources from the big-bank TARP bailout to community banks that have as their core customers small businesses.

Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello backs the move. Continue reading “Obama administration proposes $30B small-business loan fund” »
