Staunton Music Guild names new board member
Local musician Jason Clarke was recently appointed to the Staunton Music Guild’s (SMG) Board of Directors.
He replaced Board member Danny Morris who served a two year term and was instrumental in the organization’s early development. The new member was welcomed by SMG President Karen Lawrence, who voiced her appreciation for his willingness to lend his abilities to the newly approved 501(c) (3) organization. Read more

Staunton Music Guild’s popular EclectiNights Genre Showcase returns March 27 to the Clocktower Restaurant & Bar, located at 27 W. Beverley St., Staunton.
The series is designed to offer local musicians, music-related businesses and music lovers an opportunity to meet, exchange information and sample the many genres of music available in the local music scene. Read more
Application period for Ray Houser Scholarship opens
The Staunton Music Guild officially opened the application process for the newly established Ray Houser Scholarship on March 5. The scholarship fund was established in 2011 by the Staunton Music Guild in honor of Mr. Houser’s dedication to radio broadcasting, music, and his steadfast commitment towards helping others in his Shenandoah Valley community.
Ray Houser has been a local icon, DJ, musician, entrepreneur, and radio personality since 1946. This $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior from any school in Augusta County including the cities of Staunton and Waynesboro who plans to continue his/her education in the fields of broadcasting or music. ‘Ask a Soundman’ presented by Staunton Music Guild
On Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m., the Staunton Music Guild presents “Ask a Soundman” night at Staunton Creative Community Fund, 10 Byers St., Staunton.
Four local sound engineers/recording professionals will discuss and demonstrate sound techniques and tricks for musicians and venue owners looking to expand their knowledge.
The event is free and open to the public and will be facilitated by GK Audio’s Gary Kirby, Chad Wyatt of The Musician’s Source and Steve Sutton and Boris Ballard of DogBark Recording Studio.

Music Guild offers two new series for musicians in 2012
Professional development and educational events for local musicians are first up on the Staunton Music Guild’s calendar in 2012 starting with the formation of a Songwriting Circle in January and “Ask a Soundman” night in February.
The SMG Songwriting Circle will hold its first gathering on Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Byers Street Bistro, 18 Byers St. Focus of the group will be to provide feedback and support to local songwriters of all levels of experience and genres of music. Participants should bring 10 copies of a lyrics sheet and be prepared to play a song live or from a CD recording. Read more
Staunton gets state tourism-marketing grant
The Staunton Convention Visitors Bureau, Staunton Downtown Development Association and the Staunton Music Guild announced Wednesday that they have been awarded a $4,840 marketing grant as part of Virginia Tourism Corporation’s Marketing Leverage Program.
The VTC program is designed to stimulate new tourism marketing programs through the creation of local, area and regional tourism partnerships. The objective of the program is to leverage limited marketing dollars, resulting in increased visitor spending.
“The grant, along with partner and city contributions totaling almost $10,000, will enable us to raise awareness of Staunton as a vibrant arts destination with great local music and food,” said citiy tourism director Sheryl Wagner.
The marketing program, LOVE the Local Vibe, includes media placements on WashingtonPost.com, BaltimoreSun.com and Flavor magazine.

Big Brothers Big Sisters preps for benefit concert

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Blue Ridge is pleased to announce that local music personality Fritz Horisk will serve as MC for the 100 Mentors 100 Kids Benefit Concert that will be held at the Mockingbird Restaurant’s Roots Music Hall in Staunton on Saturday, June 19 at 8:30 p.m.
Horisk Fritz came to Staunton in 2006 from Wilmington, Del. He has been in and around music, radio and television since 1973.
The Staunton Music Guild is sponsoring the event as part of their ongoing community outreach mission. A lineup of guild members is providing entertainment, including Curly Straight and the Polar Opposites, Billy Caldwell and The Last Minute Band. Read more
