Art Center announces Summer Studio

The Staunton Augusta Art Center announces the final week of Summer Studio, August 1-5, 2011, 10am-Noon in the R. R. Smith Center for History and Art. Pre-registration is required. The title theme for the August classes is Make Green Your Favorite Color. Students will be creating yard, garden and other art from recycled materials.

Art graduate and Montessori teacher Sarah Beth Latane will be teaching the Bumble Bees class to 4-5 year olds. These youngsters will be buzzing around the studio, planting herbs in pots they have fashioned and creating companion rock pets and earth inspired décor.

The Garden Buddies class for 6-8 year olds will be led by Erika Mikhailova, a mom herself and a recent graduate from Mary Baldwin College’s adult degree program where she majored in art history and studio art and minored in education. Her “buddies” will be creating their own artistic mini-gardens complete with compost, planting pots, watering can, and wind chimes.

Ada Sue Myers, a multi-award winning MBC graduate and former Staunton Augusta Art Center intern, will lead the class Make Them Green With Envy for 9-12 year olds who will re-design common items with surprising, inventive results. Blue jeans become paper, plastic bags become woven rugs, and the environment stays clean.

The teachers are knowledgeable, experienced, energetic, and creative. The students develop art skills, learn art theory, and preserve precious resources and have fun in the process.

Parents may register by calling the Art Center at 885-2028. Classes are $85/week for non-members and $75/week for members; all supplies are provided.

…Ism Explosion at Staunton Augusta Art Center

The Staunton Augusta Art Center is now taking registrations for an …Ism Explosion July 11-15 (10am-noon).

Ada Sue Myers, the multiple-award-winning recent graduate from MBC’s art department, will be teaching Expressionism to 4- to 5-year-olds. They will definitely need smocks – which we provide – because these youngsters will learn Jackson Pollack-inspired painting techniques. Look out!

The Impressionism class for 6- to 8-year-olds will be taught by Beth Lint, who teaches art for Waynesboro Public Schools. She has been a favorite teacher at Summer Studio in the past and we’re happy to welcome her back, now that she has adjusted to young motherhood. What a nice coincidence that Beth’s favorite artist is Monet!

Veteran art teacher Maribeth Nolde will be leading the older campers (9- to 12-year-olds) in their exploration of Surrealism. Would you like an artistic interpretation of your dreams?

The teachers are knowledgeable, experienced, energetic, and creative. The students develop art skills in an art history/art theory context and have a blast in the process.

Register today by calling the Art Center at 540.885.2028. Classes are $85/week for non-members and $75/week for members and pre-registration is required.

Ticket deadline for Art Center Gala approaching

The Staunton Augusta Art Center announces its Golden Gala and biennial art auction set for May 21, 2011, at 6 p.m. at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel and Conference Center. Tickets are available to the general public for the dinner, auction and program which will celebrate the Staunton Augusta Art Center’s 50th year of operation.

The price of admission is $75 and reservations are required by calling the Staunton Augusta Art Center at 540-885-2028 no later than Monday, May 16. All proceeds will support the Staunton Augusta Art Center’s activities and programs.

The auction phase of the evening is a biennial event which serves as an important fundraiser for the non-profit organization whose mission is to make the enjoyment and creation of visual art available to everyone and to support artists by providing them venues to teach and to exhibit and sell their work.

The Staunton Augusta Art Center has a long history of hosting gallery exhibitions to the public at no charge, orchestrating the annual Art in the Park (also at no admission charge), offering a unique holiday shopping opportunity through Art for Gifts every November and December, teaching a variety of art classes to adults and to children including the annual Summer Studio, and advocating for arts and tourism.

Sen. Mark Warner is serving as honorary co-chair of the Golden Gala and Sen. Emmett Hanger will be in attendance to present a very special Joint Resolution by the General Assembly in commemoration of the Art Center’s 50th year and service to the community. A long tradition of the Staunton Augusta Art Center, the biennial silent and live auctions showcase excellence in the visual arts, culinary arts, literary arts, home décor, jewelry, and entertainment.

Be a part of Art in the Park

The Staunton Augusta Art Center announces that it is now receiving applications from artists of fine art and fine craft interested in participating in the 45th annual Art in the Park at Gypsy Hill, a two-day festival of quality fine art and fine craft every Memorial Day weekend and scheduled for May 29 and 30, 2011.

The site of the art festival, Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton, Virginia, is an exceptionally beautiful municipal park which provides a tree-lined, intimate setting for artists and artisans as well as area residents and tourists. Visitors linger as they admire the artwork, chat with the artists, listen to live music coming from the bandstand every hour, and enjoy food provided by a variety of vendors. Young aspiring artists participate in a children’s art activity area.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of Art in the Park and the 50th anniversary of its producer, the Staunton Augusta Art Center, a 501(c)3 non-profit arts organization. Due to limited space and wide interest, all work is freshly juried into the show each year. Applications are available at www.saartcenter.org or at the Staunton Augusta Art Center headquarters at 20 S. New St., Staunton (telephone: 540.885.2028).

The jury fee is $15. Booth fees for accepted artists and artisans are $100 ($90 for Staunton Augusta Art Center members) for the entire weekend. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2011.
