RMH will host the RMH/Bowman/Progressive Agriculture Home and Farm Safety Day on March 10 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Rockingham County Fair Grounds.

JMU Alpha Phis partner with RMH to fight women’s heart disease

The James Madison University Theta Iota chapter of Alpha Phi will host its annual “Move You Phi’t” 5K walk/run to benefit RMH Heart Check at 10 a.m. Feb. 25.

Registration and check-in will take place at 9 a.m. on the bottom floor of the JMU Festival Center.

RMH Women’s Center breast care program receives three-year national accreditation

The RMH Women’s Center’s breast care program has been granted a three-year full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.

‘Walk the Walk’ for heart health at RMH on Feb. 3

In recognition of the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day, RMH is hosting “Walk the Walk” from 11 a.m. until 1p.m. Feb. 3 at the outdoor walking path circling the RMH campus.

Healthy Families of the Blue Ridge, RMH Childcare Connection join to form RMH Family Connection

Two RMH Community Health programs, RMH Childcare Connection and Healthy Families of the Blue Ridge, have joined to form RMH Family Connection.

RMH Family Connection will serve a 10-county area in the Shenandoah Valley, from Rockbridge County north to Winchester.

RMH: ‘Positive distractions equal healing environment’

At its new Funkhouser Women’s Center on the main health campus, RMH seeks to nurture an atmosphere of wellness and healing for patients, families and visitors by selecting visual art that reflects the personality, culture and natural surroundings of the surrounding Shenandoah Valley.

RMH is working with Audrey Ziegler of Harrisonburg to select multidimensional, innovative pieces to display at its new center.   All artwork will be reviewed and approved by the Funkhouser Women’s Center art committee, with full rights to decline or accept any art offered. RMH doc first in state to implant new CRT-D therapy device

RMH electrophysiologist Robert VerNooy, MD, has successfully implanted a new type of heart pacing device that helps doctors better treat patients diagnosed with heart failure.

He is the first physician in Virginia to implant the new device.

The new pacing technology, developed by St. Jude Medical, consists of two parts: the Quartet Left Ventricular Quadripolar Pacing Lead and the Unify Quadra cardiac resynchronization therapy and defibrillator (CRT-D) generator/battery. RMH hosting free heart health symposium on Feb. 2

RMH will host a free heart health symposium, “Matters of the Heart,” beginning at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 2, at the JMU Festival Conference and Student Center with free health screenings and presentations by RMH Heart & Vascular physicians.

The symposium, presented by the RMH Heart & Vascular Center, will include the following seminars:

· “New therapies and procedures in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab,” presented by interventional cardiologist David McLaughlin, MD, of Harrisonburg Medical Associates.

· “Restore your rhythm: Comprehensive treatment of heart rhythm disorders,” presented by electrophysiologist Robert VerNooy, MD, of Harrisonburg Medical Associates.

RMH health care representatives will be available to speak with participants and answer questions. Free blood pressure screenings, educational displays and refreshments will be offered beginning at 6:30 p.m. The presentations will take place at 7 p.m.

Folic acid vital for health pregnancy and preventing some cancers

During National Folic Acid Awareness week, Jan. 8–Jan. 14, RMH reminds women of the importance of taking vitamins containing folic acid before, during and after pregnancy.

Studies have shown that women who take an over-the-counter multivitamin containing folic acid can decrease the chance of birth defects by as much as 70 percent.

“It’s really important to take folic acid even before you get pregnant,” said Dr. Catherine Slusher of Harrisonburg OB/GYN Associates. “Once you are four weeks along in your pregnancy, and just found out you are pregnant, the folic acid has already had its impact. RMH to host blood drive on Jan. 5

RMH, in conjunction with Virginia Blood Services, will host a public blood drive Jan. 5 from noon to 4 p.m. Virginia Blood Services will have its blood mobile parked in Lot A near the RMH Heart & Vascular entrance. Donors may park in Lot A close to the blood mobile.

“Winter and the holiday season are crucial times of year for blood donations,” said Terry Atwater of Virginia Blood Services. “Most people are into the holidays and away from their normal routines. As a result, blood donations decrease while the demand for blood does not. You can help save lives by making a blood donation.

Virginia Blood Services supplies nearly all blood products used by patients at RMH, including those undergoing chemotherapy.

To be considered eligible to donate, you must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health with no serious illnesses and have not donated blood within the last eight weeks.

Registered donors have preference. Call RMH Healthsource at (540) 564-7200 to register for a specific time. Walk-ins are welcome, and will be taken after registered donors.

RMH-Rockingham methane project featured by Chevrolet

The RMH-Rockingham County methane gas partnership is one of six environmental sustainability projects around the nation currently being featured by Chevrolet on its website and in its social media.

RMH partnered with Rockingham County to channel methane gas produced by landfill waste to the new hospital to use as energy. RMH is one of the first hospitals in the country to do this, according to Dennis Coffman, director, Facilities Planning at RMH. Because of the project’s uniqueness, Chevrolet selected it as a carbon-reduction project in the U.S. in which to invest, according to Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet Global Marketing and Strategy. RMH to host summer blood drive

RMH, in conjunction with Virginia Blood Services, will host a public blood drive Aug. 18, 3-8 p.m., and Aug. 19, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., in Conference Rooms 2-3 on the Lower Level of the hospital.

Guests may park in Lot A and enter through the main hospital entrance.

“Summer is a particularly important time for blood donations,” said Terry Atwater of Virginia Blood Services. “More adults and students are on the go in the summertime, so they are not donating blood on a regular schedule. You can help save lives by making a blood donation.”

Virginia Blood Services supplies virtually all the blood products used by patients at RMH, including those undergoing chemotherapy.
