RMH to host cancer survivorship celebration

RMH will host a free program, “Survivorship Celebration: Living Well With a Cancer Diagnosis,” from 5:30-7 p.m. June 7 in hospital conference rooms 2 and 3 on the lower level.

This special program is for cancer survivors, those currently dealing with a cancer diagnosis, and their families. Park in Lot A and enter the main hospital entrance. Signs directing guests to the conference will be posted. Read more

Life-saving screenings, talks at Aging Gracefully conference May 8

RMH Senior Advantage presents “Aging Gracefully,” an event promoting healthy aging as a way of life for those 55 and up, 8 a.m.-noon May 8 at the Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene, 1871 Boyers Road.

Health screenings will be offered, including cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose, hearing, depression, memory and more. Registration is required for cholesterol and hearing screenings. Other screenings are offered on a first come, first served basis with a limited number available. Read more

RMH presents drug, alcohol abuse awareness program

RMH and the Supporters of Sobriety Amongst Youth (SOSAY) have teamed together to offer the special addiction prevention program “Just Say Know: The Science Behind Drug and Alcohol Abuse.” The presentation will be held at 7 p.m. May 7 in the East Rockingham High School Auditorium.

The program, presented by Jennifer Johnson, Outpatient Program Manager for RMH Behavioral Health, aims to teach parents the science of addiction so they are better equipped to answer their children’s questions and identify warning signs. Read more

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is April 28

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and its community partners will hold the third annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. Collection sites, where unused, unneeded or expired prescription medications can be turned in, will be available across the nation.

Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue and may cause accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse, according to the DEA. Homes with children or elderly persons are especially vulnerable. Read more

Burris to serve as interim CFO at RMH

RMH officials have announced that Mike Burris, chief financial officer of Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, will serve as interim CFO at RMH starting about May 1 while continuing his current duties as CFO of Martha Jefferson.

Burris will fill the vacancy left by current RMH CFO Mike King, who has accepted a position with El Camino Hospital in the Silicon Valley of California. King, who has been with RMH since 2007, will leave RMH at the end of April, according to hospital officials. Read more

Create a personal advance care plan during National Advanced Care Planning Week

During National Advanced Care Planning Week, April 16-20, RMH encourages all adults to create an advanced care plan.

An advanced care plan, also known as an advanced directive, is a statement expressing a person’s health care choices if he or she is unable to state his or her own treatment wishes. Read more

April is National Donate Life Month

During National Donate Life Month in April, RMH celebrates the generosity of those who have saved lives by becoming organ, tissue, marrow and blood donors and encourages others to follow their lead.

One donor can save as many as nine lives through organ donation, enhance more than 50 lives through tissue donation and restore sight to two people through eye donation, according to Donate Life America. Read more
