Rapids down Generals, 4-2

The eighth inning was cruel to Waynesboro Tuesday. A failed suicide squeeze in the top half of the inning and some successful small ball by Rockbridge in the bottom half proved to be the difference as the Rapids defeated the Generals 4-2.

A leadoff double by Jared King had Waynesboro, then down 2-1, in business. A Colin Harrington sacrifice bunt moved King to third with one out. Manager Derek McDaniel put the squeeze on with leadoff hitter Jon Clinard at the plate, but the 1-1 pitch was well outside the strike zone, and King was tagged out by Rockbridge catcher Dillon Way. Clinard then grounded out to end the inning.

A pair of infield hits by Way and Shane Davis led off the bottom of the eighth for Rockbridge. A wild pitch by reliever Justin Thompson moved the runners to second and third, and Andrew Siano followed with a two-RBI single that made it 4-1.

A two-out ninth-inning single by Chase Worthington scored Drew Turocy to make it 4-2 and bring the tying run to the plate, but T.J. Kuban grounded out to end it.

Michael Reed (0-4) took the loss for Waynesboro in a solid effort, giving up two runs, one earned, in six and two-thirds innings.

Chris Griener (2-2) picked up the win for Rockbridge, which has now won four in a row overall.

Bradshaw dominates in 5-2 Waynesboro win

Daniel Bradshaw had no doubts that he would be back on the mound for the ninth inning. He had some convincing to do as far as manager Derek McDaniel was concerned.

“I was at 92 pitches. I wanted to go back out there. Coach said if somebody gets on base that he was going to come and get me,” said Bradshaw, who worked around a two-out ninth-inning throwing error to finish out the complete-game 5-2 Waynesboro victory over Rockbridge Friday night at Mathers Park.

Generals lose home opener

Story by Chris Graham

The 2009 Waynesboro Generals probably pack up the tent. The 2010 Generals battled back and had the tying run on base in the ninth inning after falling down 9-3 in the fifth.

Moral victories can sometimes ring hollow, but Waynesboro’s 11-9 loss to Rockbridge Sunday night felt significant somehow.

“We played hard. Down 9-3, and we made it a game. I know it’s early in the year, but what I see of these kids, I really like,” Waynesboro manager Derek McDaniel said.

The fourspot that the Rapids put up in the fifth inning, after Waynesboro starter Jeremy Thompson (Patrick Henry Community College, freshman) had gotten the first two Rockbridge batters out to start off the fifth, made it 9-3 and put the game seemingly out of reach.
