#25 UVa. sneaks by Radford in extras
Nate Irving (Fr., Yonkers, N.Y.) hit a walk-off single in the 11th inning to score Mitchell Shifflett (So., Midlothian, Va.) and lift the No. 25 Virginia baseball to a 3-2 victory over Radford Tuesday evening at Davenport Field. Irving’s hit capped a career-high four hit night for the freshman catcher.
The walk-off hit made a winner of Justin Thompson (Sr., Danville, Va.), who pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief and improved to 3-1 this year. Abram Williams (1-3) gave up the winning hit in the 11th and took the loss for Radford (23-17). Read more
VMI squeaks past Radford in Big South Tourney
The #7 VMI Keydets defeated the #10 Radford Highlanders, 55-53, in a dramatic first round of the 2012 Advance Auto Parts Men’s Basketball Championship, Monday, Feb. 27 at Cameron Hall. The Keydets advance to Wednesday’s quarterfinals and will play No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina at 12:00 p.m. at UNC Asheville’s Kimmel Arena.
With 1:19 remaining, Radford’s (6-26) Johnathan Edwards split two free throws to pull the Highlanders within a point. The Keydets’ (15-15) Stan Okoye missed a jumper at the other end, and Radford had a chance to take the lead. Point guard R.J. Price drove into the lane, but a bounce pass attempt was intercepted by Okoye. The junior then made two free throws with 19 seconds remaining, making it a 54-51 game. Read more
VMI wins at Radford, 65-60
Stan Okoye had 23 points and nine rebounds, helping the VMI Keydets earn their first road win of the season in downing the Radford Highlanders, 65-60, in Big South basketball action Thursday night at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va.
Okoye posted 14 of his 23 points in the second half, which saw VMI (11-10, 6-5 Big South) launch a 15-1 run on a Rodney Glasgow jumper with 15:28 remaining. That spurt turned a 35-32 Highlander (4-19, 1-10) lead into a 47-36 Keydet advantage, and VMI would not trail again. Read more
VMI holds off late Radford rally, wins 80-76
Keith Gabriel had 28 points and matched his career-high with eight rebounds, and the VMI Keydets survived a furious rally by the Radford Highlanders to pull out an 80-76 victory in Big South basketball action Saturday night at Cameron Hall.
The win maintains VMI’s perfect home record, now 8-0, and marks the Keydets’ 12th consecutive victory at Cameron Hall.
Of Gabriel’s 28, 20 came in the second half as he hit on 4 of 5 three-point attempts of the final 20 minutes. That included three treys in a key four-possession sequence early in the second half, a run that gave VMI (9-9, 4-4 Big South) its first double-digit lead of the night. The Keydets maintained their advantage for the remainder of the contest, but Radford (3-16, 0-7) would not quit. Read more
Liberty women top Radford
Liberty started its New Year’s Eve celebration a few hours early by opening its Big South Conference schedule with a hard-fought 76-68 win at Radford Saturday afternoon. The Lady Flames used a 16-0 run early in the second half to break open a close game, and held off several rally attempts by the Highlanders down the stretch at the Dedmon Center.
The Lady Flames, who leveled their overall record at 6-6, start the Big South schedule at 1-0 for the 11th time in the last 12 years. Liberty, which put four players in double figures in the scoring column, shot a season-best 60.5 percent (26-of-43) from the field for the contest.
Radford drops to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play, despite forcing 39 Liberty turnovers and turning the miscues into 42 points. It was the fifth straight season the Lady Flames have posted a win inside the Dedmon Center. Read more
UVa. women roll over Radford
Virginia won its fourth consecutive contest and remained undefeated at home this season with a 92-43 victory over Radford at John Paul Jones Arena on Sunday (Dec. 18).
The victory improved Virginia’s record to 9-2, the program’s best start since beginning the 2008-09 season with a 14-2 record.
With the loss, Radford’s record went to 6-4.
Junior reserve guard Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) matched a career-high with 19 points to lead five Cavaliers in double figures. Gerson finished the game 6-for-8 from the field, including 4-of-6 from behind the three-point line, and added four assists and four steals. Read more

JMU snaps two-game losing streak
JMU improved to 7-3 overall, snapped a two-game losing streak, and evened its record on its current five-game road trip to 2-2. The Dukes also improved to 10-2 in the head-to-head series with Radford, winning their fifth in a row. RU dropped to 2-7 on the season with its seventh straight loss. Read more
