Salem routs P-Nats, 13-4

Salem surged in front early and led throughout en route to a 13-4 demolition over Potomac on Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium, evening up the four-game series at one game apiece heading into Saturday.

Sean Coyle recorded three extra-base hits and six RBI to lead the sizzling Sox offense, while Drew Hedman and Christian Vazquez each drove in three more to catapult the Sox to their largest run output of the season. Southpaw Manny Rivera struck out five P-Nats over three and two-thirds scoreless innings out of the pen to earn his second win of the year. Read more

P-Nats rally late, blitz Salem

Potomac used a five-run sixth and a three-run seventh to transform a tight 2-2 ballgame into a laugher in Thursday’s series opener at Pfitzner Stadium.

The Nationals prevailed 10-4 despite being outhit 11-10 by the Sox, who missed numerous opportunities early in the game and stranded 11 baserunners on the night. Salem first-baseman Travis Shaw led all hitters with four hits and three RBI, bringing his early-season average to .420 (21-for-50). Read more

‘Cats crush P-Nats in series finale

The Hillcats scored in seven of nine innings Sunday afternoon in their 13-2 win over the Potomac Nationals. Catcher Evan Gattis had a career day with five hits, including a three-run homer and six RBI, leading the Hillcats to the blow out victory. RHP Aaron Northcraft quietly pitched six innings, allowing just two runs and earned the win.

After retiring the first two batters of the game, LHP Matt Grace’s long day on the mound began with back-to-back doubles from Tommy La Stella, Gattis, and Edward Salcedo for the Hillcats. La Stella and Gattis came in to score and Salcedo would go stranded on the bases. The ‘Cats led 2-0 in the first. Read more

Lynchburg holds on

The Hillcats snapped a two-game slide with a 6-4 win over the Potomac Nationals tonight. The Nationals brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but closer Matt Chaffee struck out Adrian Sanchez looking to end the game and secure the win for the Hillcats.

Second baseman Tommy La Stella put the Hillcats on the board first with an RBI double scoring Matt Lipka in the top of the first inning. The Nationals answered in the second inning with a Kevin Keyes solo home run. It was Keyes’ second home run in as many nights against the Hillcats this weekend. Read more

Wild night on the mound dooms Lynchburg

The Nationals took advantage of four first inning walks issued by the Hillcats’ starter, Ronan Pacheco, to take an immediate 5-0 lead. The Hillcats were unable to erase the early deficit and fell 11-4. Lynchburg lost for the second night in a row but are still in first place at 5-2.

Right fielder Randolph Oduber and second baseman Adrian Sanchez both drove in two runs in the first inning for Potomac. All four walks issued by Pacheco scored in the inning. The Hillcats fell behind 5-0 after one inning of play. Read more

Lynchburg completes weekend sweep

The Hillcats completed the sweep of the Potomac Nationals on Easter Sunday with a 3-2 victory. It was the first three game sweep at home of the Nats since April of 1997 when the P-Nats were the Prince William Cannons in the St. Louis Cardinals’ family. Second baseman Tommy La Stella added three RBIs–for the second time this season–to carry the Hillcats to victory and the 13-best prospect in the Braves organization, J.R. Graham picked up his first victory of the season.

Lynchburg takes down P-Nats

The Hillcats picked up their second victory against the Potomac Nationals thanks to offensive contributions from top to bottom Saturday night. Highlighting the 7-2 Hillcats win was Robby Hefflinger’s second home run in as many days.  The story on the Nationals side wasn’t just about losing the game, it’s largely centered on losing the number two prospect in the organization, Anthony Rendon, after he injured his ankle rounding third base in the fourth inning.

It was a battle of lefties with the Hillcats’ Ronan Pacheco taking on the Nats’ Bobby Hansen. After a quick top half of the first inning, thanks to Pacheco not allowing a hit, the Hillcats bats picked up right where they left off last night. Read more
