Safe at Home now available as e-book
The New Market Rebels of the Valley Baseball League are pleased to announce that Safe at Home: A Season in the Valley, a non-fiction work about the 2009 Rebels’s squad, is now available as an e-book.
“I’m excited about offering Safe at Home in this format,” says author Austin Gisriel. “Publishing is changing rapidly and it is important for authors to change with it in order to offer their readers the best experience possible.”
Safe at Home is available for the Kindle, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Sony, and Kobo readers among others and the book may be ordered through the Kindle Store or Smashwords.com. Amazon offers a free Kindle application for your PC, Mac, iPhone, Blackberry, iPad, Android, or Windows 7 phone. The e-book retails for $2.99.
Each chapter contains a link to the Safe at Home on-line photo album where Melissa Dodge’s outstanding photographs that appeared in the printed version may be viewed in full color.
The book was printed in paperback form by Augusta Free Press Publishing LLC, the parent company of AugustaFreePress.com.
Gisriel’s next e-publishing project also involves the Valley League. A 30 year retrospective tentatively entitled “The Glorious Summer,” the lengthy article focuses on the 1981 season in which New Market and the Winchester Royals battled for the Valley League crown. The Rebels boasted three future major leaguers that year in Tom Browning, John Kruk, and Dan Pasqua, but it was Winchester that had the season of a lifetime. Plans currently call for this e-article to be offered at no charge.
New Market holds off Waynesboro, 4-3
Story by Chris Graham

A two-out eighth-inning throwing error gave New Market the eventual winning run in a 4-3 win at Waynesboro Sunday night.
The Generals had rallied twice from deficits on run-scoring hits by Drew Turocy. A two-out fifth-inning Turocy single scored Colin Harrington from second to tie the game at 1-1. Then after the Rebels took a 3-1 lead in the sixth with two runs off starter Jeremy Fitzgerald, Turocy tied the game back up in the seventh with a one-out bases-loaded single that scored Harrington and Jon Clinard.
It was a Turocy error in the eighth that gave New Market the 4-3 lead. With two outs and Dan Schafferman on first base, Joe Maloney singled to center. Schafferman rounded second and was about to make it to third safely when Turocy tried to gun him down. The throw was wide of the bag and got past third baseman Chase Worthington and went into the Waynesboro dugout, allowing Schafferman to advance home.
Turocy nearly atoned for the mistake in the ninth, hitting a 1-1 pitch over the right-field fence, but the ball hooked just foul, and he struck out looking on the next pitch.
Jake Guengrich (1-0) picked up the win with two and a third innings of hitless, scoreless relief. Justin Thompson (1-1) was the tough-luck loser, giving up one run, unearned, in two innings of work.

Austin Gisriel: Par for the worse
Column by Austin Gisriel

With our record snow now melting, local golf courses will soon be dotted with duffers everywhere. My only question is: Why?
The problem with golf is that the fun is fleeting, but the aggravation is permanent. Golfers talk about the need to work on your game, as in “You know, if you worked at your short irons, you might break 100.” If golf is a game that you play, then why do you have to work at it? “Play” is supposed to be much more fun than “work,” but that’s not the case with golf.
And don’t tell me that a bad day on the golf course is better than a good day at work. No, it isn’t; it isn’t even better than a bad day at work, because if you have a bad day at work, you can blame your boss, your coworkers, your suppliers, your clients, or even the guy who made the coffee in the office lounge, but if you have a bad day on the golf course, it’s your fault! There’s no denying it. You can’t say that your secretary shanked a drive into the pond that cost you a score that doesn’t even have a name because there’s no such thing as a heptuple bogey.
