Omaha Bound: Cavs rally in ninth to earn College World Series trip

A two-out, bases-loaded single by Chris Taylor brought Virginia back from the brink of elimination and sent the top-seeded Cavs to their second College World Series in three years with a 3-2 win over Cal-Irvine.

The rally began with two outs and two strikes on David Coleman, who singled through the middle off Irvine reliever Matt Summers. Jared King singled off Summers, who then walked pinch-hitter Reid Gragnani to set up Taylor’s final at-bat heroics.

Virginia will open play at the College World Series on Sunday, June 19, against California at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. That game will begin at 2 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN and online at ESPN3.com. UVa will be making its second trip in the last three years to Omaha. Irvine rallies to knock off #1 Cavs, force decisive Game 3

UC Irvine rallied to defeat No. 1 national seed Virginia 6-4 in game two of the NCAA Super Regional in front of a sellout crowd of 5,050 at Davenport Field. The Anteaters came back from a 3-0 deficit to even the series at one game each and force a decisive game three on Monday at 4 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN2.

There will be a limited amount of cash parking available Monday. The University Hall and McCue Center lots will be available for pre-paid parking only. Pre-paid parking as well as cash parking also will be available in the John Paul Jones Arena parking lots. Free parking will be available in the Emmet/Ivy Garage.

UVa. wins Super Regional opener

No. 1 national seed Virginia blanked UC Irvine 6-0 in front of 5,050 fans at Davenport Field Saturday afternoon.

Danny Hultzen and Cody Winiarski combined for the shutout, the Cavaliers’ NCAA-leading 16th of the season. Jared King led Virginia offensively, going 3-for-4, including a 3-run homer. Chris Taylor and Steven Proscia each had two hits for the Cavaliers. Sean Madigan reached base three times to lead UC Irvine, drawing three walks.

‘Hoos to host Irvine in Supers

The NCAA announced this morning that Charlottesville, Va., has been selected as one of eight super regional host sites for the 2011 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. Virginia will play host to UC Irvine in a best-of-three series, which will run June 11-13 at UVa’s Davenport Field. The teams will play at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 1, 4 or 7 p.m. Monday (if necessary).

All three games will be televised on the ESPN family of networks. The Saturday and Sunday games will be broadcast on ESPNU, while the Monday contest would air on ESPN2 or ESPNU. Super! UVa. bests ECU

Virginia won the Charlottesville Regional with a 13-1 victory over East Carolina in the championship game Sunday night before 5,050 fans at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers, the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, advance to the NCAA Super Regional round for the third consecutive season as they also recorded their school-record 52nd victory of the season.

JMU falls to UNC, ousted from NCAAs

North Carolina pulled away from a tie game after five innings to defeat James Madison 9-3 to win the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional and advance to the super regional round on Sunday night at Boshamer Stadium.

UNC, the overall No. 3 seed nationally and ranked 10th, swept through the regional by a three-game combined score of 27-3 to reach its fifth super regional in the last six years. JMU earns rematch with UNC

Junior right-hander Evan Scott (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) worked 7 1/3 innings and James Madison used a four-run second inning to defeat Maine 5-2 and advance to the championship round of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional on Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.

JMU (42-18), ranked 28th by Collegiate Baseball, bounced back from its first loss in 11 games on Saturday night to eliminate Maine (32-23). The Dukes advance in the regional to face 10th-ranked and national No. 3 seed North Carolina at 6 p.m. Sunday night. The Tar Heels shut out the Dukes 14-0 Saturday. #1 UVa. blasts St. John’s

Virginia improved to 2-0 in the Charlottesville Regional with a 10-2 win over St. John’s on Saturday night before a Davenport Field record crowd of 5,050. The Cavaliers, the No. 1 national seed, tied the school record with their 51st win of the season. UVa advances to the regional championship game at 6 p.m. Sunday. St. John’s and East Carolina will play an elimination game at 1 p.m. Sunday to determine the Cavaliers’ opponent. Fewer than 800 tickets remain for the 6 p.m. championship game.

Danny Hultzen picked up the win for Virginia, striking out 12 batters while allowing one run on three hits in seven innings of work. Hultzen, who improved to 11-3 this season, set a new school record with 148 strikeouts this season, breaking the record of 146 set by Tim Burcham in 1985. JMU falls at #3 UNC

Senior right-hander Patrick Johnson struck out 11 over eight innings and North Carolina blew open a 4-0 game with a seven-run seventh en route to a 14-0 shutout victory in game four of the NCAA Regional in Chapel Hill on Saturday night at Boshamer Stadium.

UNC, ranked 10th nationally by Collegiate Baseball and the overall No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, improved to 47-14 and advanced to Sunday’s 6 p.m. regional championship game. Meanwhile, 28th-ranked JMU saw the nation’s longest winning streak come to an end at 10 games while falling to 41-18. Roberts dominant in 6-0 UVa. NCAA win

In the opening game of the Charlottesville Regional, Virginia defeated Navy 6-0 on Friday afternoon at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers, the No. 1 national seed, opened regional play with a win for the fifth time in the past six years.

Will Roberts picked up the win for Virginia, striking out a career-high 14 batters in a complete game four-hit shutout. He improved to 11-1 this season. JMU rallies for win in NCAA opener

James Madison charged ahead with a six-run seventh inning and sophomore D.J. Brown (Locust Grove, Va./Orange County) allowed three hits in 7 1/3 innings of relief in an 11-7 victory over FIU on Friday afternoon at North Carolina’s Boshamer Stadium.

JMU, ranked 28th nationally by Collegiate Baseball, ran the nation’s longest winning streak to 10 games to improve to 41-17. The Dukes, the regional’s No. 3 seed, advance to face the winner of Friday night’s game between No. 1 UNC and No. 4 Maine.
