UVa. falls to N.C. State, now awaits NCAA fate
Sophomore forward C.J. Leslie scored 19 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds to lead NC State to a 67-64 victory over Virginia in a quarterfinal game in the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament Friday afternoon (March 9) at Philips Arena.
Leslie made nine of 11 field goal attempts in the game.
Sophomore guard Lorenzo Brown had 15 points and a game-high eight assists for the Wolfpack and junior forward Richard Howell added 10 points. Read more
VCU edges Drexel, 59-56, to win CAA title
VCU built a big first-half lead behind its trademark pressure defense , and Troy Daniels’ clutch free throws in the final minute allowed the second-seeded Rams to hang on for a 59-56 victory over #1 seed Drexel in the 2012 Virginia 529 CAA Men’s Basketball Championship game. The game was played before a sellout crowd of 11,200 at the Richmond Coliseum.
VCU (28-6), which captured its fifth CAA championship overall and first since 2009, returns to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last six seasons a year after making a magical run to the Final Four. Read more
Omaha Bound: Cavs rally in ninth to earn College World Series trip
A two-out, bases-loaded single by Chris Taylor brought Virginia back from the brink of elimination and sent the top-seeded Cavs to their second College World Series in three years with a 3-2 win over Cal-Irvine.
The rally began with two outs and two strikes on David Coleman, who singled through the middle off Irvine reliever Matt Summers. Jared King singled off Summers, who then walked pinch-hitter Reid Gragnani to set up Taylor’s final at-bat heroics.
Virginia will open play at the College World Series on Sunday, June 19, against California at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. That game will begin at 2 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN and online at ESPN3.com. UVa will be making its second trip in the last three years to Omaha. Read more
Irvine rallies to knock off #1 Cavs, force decisive Game 3
UC Irvine rallied to defeat No. 1 national seed Virginia 6-4 in game two of the NCAA Super Regional in front of a sellout crowd of 5,050 at Davenport Field. The Anteaters came back from a 3-0 deficit to even the series at one game each and force a decisive game three on Monday at 4 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN2.
There will be a limited amount of cash parking available Monday. The University Hall and McCue Center lots will be available for pre-paid parking only. Pre-paid parking as well as cash parking also will be available in the John Paul Jones Arena parking lots. Free parking will be available in the Emmet/Ivy Garage.
Drew Hillman and Tommy Reyes each went 2-for-4 to lead UC Irvine, which snapped Virginia’s eight-game win streak. Chris Taylor went 2-for-3 to lead the Cavaliers. Read more
UVa. wins Super Regional opener
No. 1 national seed Virginia blanked UC Irvine 6-0 in front of 5,050 fans at Davenport Field Saturday afternoon.
Danny Hultzen and Cody Winiarski combined for the shutout, the Cavaliers’ NCAA-leading 16th of the season. Jared King led Virginia offensively, going 3-for-4, including a 3-run homer. Chris Taylor and Steven Proscia each had two hits for the Cavaliers. Sean Madigan reached base three times to lead UC Irvine, drawing three walks.
Game two of the best-of-three series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Davenport Field. The game will be televised by ESPNU. Read more

‘Hoos to host Irvine in Supers
The NCAA announced this morning that Charlottesville, Va., has been selected as one of eight super regional host sites for the 2011 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. Virginia will play host to UC Irvine in a best-of-three series, which will run June 11-13 at UVa’s Davenport Field. The teams will play at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 1, 4 or 7 p.m. Monday (if necessary).
All three games will be televised on the ESPN family of networks. The Saturday and Sunday games will be broadcast on ESPNU, while the Monday contest would air on ESPN2 or ESPNU. WINA 1070-AM will carry the local radio broadcast for all games of the super regional. Read more
