Cody Reine hit two more home runs, including a three-run shot in the first on the heels of a controversial call on a 3-2 pitch to Tyler Ogle by home-plate umpire Chuck Lyon that extended that inning, and Bobby Shore pitched eight strong innings for Oklahoma as the Sooners punched their ticket to Omaha with a surprisingly easy 11-0 win over Virginia in the finale of the Super Regional best-of-three Monday night in Charlottesville. Cavs advance to regional final

Virginia improved to 2-0 in the Charlottesville Regional with a 13-7 win over Mississippi on Saturday night at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers, the No. 5 national seed, tied the school record with their 49th win of the season and also tied a school record with their 32nd home victory of the year.

John Barr led the Virginia attack by going 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Jarrett Parker and Tyler Cannon each scored three runs as every Cavalier starter had at least one hit for the second straight game.

Cavalier ace Danny Hultzen improved to 10-1 with the win, pitching six innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. Branden Kline threw the final three innings, allowing just one run, to record the save. Ole Miss starter Aaron Barrett fell to 7-5 with the loss, allowing seven runs (three earned) on six hits in 2.2 innings pitched. Read more

Who gets the ball for #1 Virginia’s NCAA Tournament opener against VCU on Friday? That’s the question of the day for coach Brian O’Connor.

“We’re still in the process of evaluating the teams. I know that it will be either Cody Winiarski or Danny Hultzen,” said O’Connor in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, looking ahead to the 4 p.m. Friday matchup with the Rams, the champions of the Colonial, who dropped a 10-5 decision to UVa. at Davenport Stadium on May 4. Just doesn’t add up

One last bit on the NCAA baseball tournament BS, and I promise I’ll be done.
I’ve heard talk about how the NCAA was looking to make the seedings of the tourney field basically a 1-64 kind of thing. Examining that one, UC-Irvine, the host of the Irvine Regional and the #6 national seed, would stand to play the winner of a #27 vs. #38 matchup in the second round of a 64-team tournament. Read more
