Wright invited to WNBA Draft

Fourteen of the top women’s basketball prospects have been invited to the 2010 WNBA Draft presented by adidas on Thursday, April 8, and Virginia’s Monica Wright has been selected.

ESPN2 and ESPN360.com will provide live coverage and analysis of the first round of the draft beginning at 3 p.m. ESPNU and NBA TV will broadcast the second and third rounds.

Paulisha Kellum (Upper Marlboro, Md.) scored 10 points in overtime to lead No. 21 Virginia to a 69-63 road victory at Miami Thursday night. Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) finished with 24 points as the Cavaliers’ high scorer.

It was UVa’s first overtime game of the 2009-10 season, and its record improved to 18-6 overall and 7-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. With the loss, Miami’s record went to 16-8 overall and 3-6 in the ACC.

Wright’s 25 push UVa. past Clemson

Senior guard Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) moved into fifth place on the ACC’s all-time scoring list and No. 24 Virginia defeated visiting Clemson, 82-60, Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena.

With the victory, Virginia improved to 16-6 overall and 5-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson’s record fell to 11-13, 2-6 in the league.

Wright finished with 25 points, bringing her career total to 2,293. Already Virginia’s all-time leading scorer, Wright moved into sole possession of fifth place in the history of the ACC. She passed former North Carolina guard Ivory Latta (2003-07; 2,285 points). Fourth place on the league’s all-time scoring list is occupied by N.C. State’s Linda Page (1982-85; 2,307 points). Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) scored 27 points to lead the 24th-ranked Virginia women’s basketball team to its first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season, a 70-56 victory over in-state rival Virginia Tech.

Virginia’s overall record improved to 12-5, while its conference record went to 1-2. Virginia Tech, meanwhile, looking for its second-straight upset over a ranked opponent after defeating No. 10 North Carolina in its last outing, dropped to 11-6 overall, 1-2 in the ACC.

Wright’s 27 points marked her 10th 20+ point performance of the season, and the senior guard moved into the ACC’s all-time top 10 scoring list. She is now the only UVa player in the league’s all-time top 10 with 2,167 career points. Continue reading “UVa. gets first ACC win” »

Monica Wright scored 20 points to pass Dawn Staley as the women’s career scoring leader in Virginia history, but No. 23 Virginia fell 61-60 to Maryland on Monday night.

Wright finished with 20 points, and had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but was defended very closely, and no foul was called.

Wright, a preseason All-American and the ACC’s preseason player of the year, came into the game needing 16 points to pass Staley’s total of 2,135 points. Staley, the best player in school history, played from 1989-92 and was a two-time national player of the year. She was also the Cavaliers assists leader until Sharneé Zoll passed her record in February 2008. Wright now has 2,140 points for her career. Continue reading “Bittersweet” »

Virginia women’s basketball senior guard Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) earned the second ACC Player of the Week honor of the 2009-10 season Monday, sharing the accolade with Miami’s Shenise Johnson.

Wright averaged 23.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 6.3 steals per game in a 3-0 week for the Cavaliers. The 20th-ranked Virginia women’s basketball team defeated Samford, 69-60, on the opening day of the Marriott Cavalier Classic at John Paul Jones Arena. UVa senior guard Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) led all scorers with 28 points and added nine rebounds and six steals.

With the win, Virginia’s record improved to 8-3 on the year. The Cavaliers advance to the championship game of the Marriott Cavalier Classic for the 22nd time as they look to win their sixth-straight title. UVa’s opponent in the 7 p.m. championship game on Tuesday (Dec. 29) will be Liberty, as the Flames dispatched Cornell, 70-40, in the earlier game of the tournament. University of Virginia senior Monica Wright has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office.

Wright, the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, scored 30 points for the 19th-ranked Cavaliers and tied a career-high with nine steals in the squad’s 74-43 win over Furman on Dec. 8. The guard from Woodbridge, Va., added seven assists and eight rebounds vs. the Paladins. Wright finished 10-for-16 from the field with two 3-pointers and was 8-for-12 from the charity stripe. James Madison guard Dawn Evans matched a career-high with 38 points to key an upset of the 14th-ranked Virginia women’s basketball team, 75-73. Monica Wright led the Cavaliers with 31 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

Virginia’s record went to 6-2 with the loss, while JMU remained undefeated and improved its record to 6-0.

Virginia senior guard Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) has been named a preseason first team All-American by Lindy’s College Basketball, and the Cavaliers are ranked No. 11 in the publication’s preseason poll.
