Mike Hernandez pitched seven strong innings, and the offense put up 17 hits and scored in five consecutive innings, as Waynesboro posted an 11-3 win over New Market Friday night at Mathers Park at Kate Collins Field.

Hernandez dominant in season-opening win

Opening Night starter Mike Hernandez was dominant in an eight-inning, one-hit, no-run performance, and Waynesboro broke through with an unearned run in the seventh en route to a 2-0 win at New Market Saturday night.

Hernandez, a sophomore righthander from Butler, struck out seven and allowed just two Rebels to get on base. Andrew Blackwell, a sophomore from Western Carolina, allowed the first two batters he faced to get on base before battling back to record the save.

The Waynesboro Generals announced today the signing of two members of the Butler University baseball team for 2010 – pitcher Mike Hernandez and infielder Grant Fillipitch.

There’s always next year

I was still trying to be hopeful Sunday night after the loss to the Covington Lumberbacks that put our Waynesboro Generals team on the brink of elimination from the 2009 Valley League playoff race.
Team owner Jerry Carter, out of character, for those who know him, was the realist among us.
“We’re still in this,” I insisted, spelling out how we could still go 3-1 or 4-0 the rest of the way and catch the ‘Jacks by the regular-season finale Thursday night, though admittedly a lot would have to go our way for that to happen.
“I just want to win one game,” Carter said, and then added that he’d had this sinking feeling that a loss the next night at Rockbridge that would break the Rapids’ long losing streak could very well be in the offing, and what would that do for us? Read more
