End of the road for Shannon at UM?

My two cents – there’s no way Randy Shannon survives the 2010 season with his job as the head football coach at Miami.

Two caveats – that the ‘Canes win out, or that the school decides to go against its recent 30-year history in football and says it doesn’t consider itself a major football power.

Shannon, in his fourth season at the helm at his alma mater, saw his team drop to 5-3 after what had to be an embarrassing 24-19 loss at Virginia on Saturday. I say embarrassing because the Hurricanes went into the game as a 15-point favorite, and the line seemed low, actually, considering UVa.’s anemic showing in ACC games this year – the Cavs had been outscored by a combined 111-45 in losses to Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina.

UVa. loss could be final straw

U lose: Cavs hold on for 24-20 upset of #22 Miami

It’s hard to get a handle on a game that saw the team that scored 19 unanswered points in the final 10:34 still lose. A five-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run by Keith Payne after UVa.’s fifth interception of the day gave the ‘Hoos a 24-0 lead, and turned out to be the decisive score in what turned out to be a 24-19 Virginia win over #22 Miami.

“I have to talk about this team being resilient regardless of what people say. In that locker room right there is a group of proud football players and coaches,” said coach Mike London, who recorded his first ACC win and his first win over a ranked team in his first season at the helm of the UVa. program.

The Cavs (4-4, 1-3 ACC) led 14-0 at the half on a 16-yard pass from Marc Verica to Colter Phillips on a fourth-and-three play and a 30-yard cutback run by Payne on a third-and-three late in the first half. Robert Randolph connected on a 32-yard field goal midway through the third to extend the lead to 17-0, and the Payne run, following the second interception of the day by Corey Mosley, sending to the exits some of the Miami faithful who had come out expecting their ‘Canes, 15-point favorites coming in, to roll to an easy victory.

Press Conference: Randy Shannon

Miami football coach Randy Shannon talks with the media on Tuesday. Miami (5-2, 3-1 ACC) takes on Virginia (3-4, 0-3 ACC) on Saturday.

Opening Comments

Another ACC opponent in the Coastal Division, we’ve got Virginia this week. Good football team. Watching them early in the season they played USC tough at USC. They play tough on defense. Coach London has done a great job of getting those guys to play hard the entire football game. When you watch them on tape, you can’t look at their record. They can run the football well. I watched them the week before playing North Carolina; they were moving the ball up and down the field but turnovers got them. They play nine men in the box trying to stuff the run game. They have two really good corners who do a great job in what they are trying to do. It’s going to be a big challenge for us, especially our offensive line and our running game. Miami: Nine wins won't be enough

Miami at Virginia: Oct. 30
Virginia Tech at Miami: Nov. 20

A 9-4 season in year three of a rebuilding job is good enough at most schools, but Miami isn’t most schools. Meaning the pressure is on UM alum Randy Shannon to produce in year four, or there might not be a year five.

Shannon has recruited well since taking over the program in 2007, re-establishing The U’s dominance in talent-laden South Florida, and the high level of talent in the program is evident. Continue reading “Miami: Nine wins won't be enough” »
