Arena elected to Soccer Hall of Fame

Bruce Arena, whose coaching record includes five NCAA Championships as the head coach of Virginia, two FIFA World Cups with the United States and two MLS Cup titles, has been elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2010 on the Builder ballot.

To be eligible for the Hall of Fame as a Builder, an individual in a non-playing capacity must have demonstrated a major, sustained and positive impact on U.S. soccer on a national or first division professional level for a minimum of 10 years.

Arena was named on 78 percent of the ballots. In 2009, Arena was the leading vote-getter on the Builder ballot, but did not meet the requirement of being named to 50 percent of the ballots to earn election. Read more

EMU’s Brunk named first-team all-region

Sophomore Dillon Brunk (Dayton, Va./Eastern Mennonite) was recently named to the First Team All-South Atlantic Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

After his first year as the fulltime keeper for the EMU soccer men, Brunk was one of only three sophomores as well as only three ODAC players on the regional’s first team. Read more

UVa. wins sixth NCAA men’s soccer national championship

The No. 2 Virginia men’s soccer team captured its sixth NCAA Championship, and first since 1994, with a 3-2 penalty kick shootout win over No. 1 Akron following a 0-0 draw in the NCAA Championship final at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Cavaliers (19-3-3) ended the season on a 16-game unbeaten streak.

The title was the sixth for the Cavaliers in program history, having won the championship in 1989 and from 1991-94. The victory also gave the Virginia its 19th team national championship in school history, the first since men’s lacrosse in 2006.  Read more

Brian Ownby’s (Glen Allen, Va.) golden goal in the 93rd minute lifted the No. 2 Virginia men’s soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 3 Wake Forest in the first semifinal of the 2009 College Cup at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The victory sent the Cavaliers (18-3-3) into their first national championship final since 1997, as they look for their first national title since 1994. Read more

JMU men’s soccer ties Northeastern

The James Madison-Northeastern men’s soccer match ended in a 1-1 deadlock Monday afternoon at the JMU Soccer Complex.

With the double-overtime tie between the Colonial Athletic Association opponents, Northeastern lost its chance of gaining the number one seed for the upcoming conference tournament while JMU was eliminated from contention for the four-team tournament.

JMU’s overall record stands at 9-5-3 and its CAA record is 4-4-2. With the tie the Dukes remain in seventh place in the league standings. Read more
