Brown double-double fuels Liberty comeback win

Liberty defeated Coastal Carolina for the 32nd consecutive time Monday evening at Kimbel Arena, but it wasn’t easy. The Lady Flames trailed by 10 points in the second half, but used a 24-2 game-closing run to pull out a 57-38 road win over the Chanticleers.
The Lady Flames improved to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in the Big South with their seventh consecutive win. Avery Warley and 2008 Waynesboro High School graduate Devon Brown both notched double-doubles, keying Liberty’s furious comeback.
Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina lost for the first time in nine home games, dropping to 12-6 overall and 3-3 in conference action. The Chanticleers owned a 28-18 lead with 17:06 left, but were outscored 39-10 the rest of the way.
Brown scored nine points in an 18-0 Liberty run that gave the Flames a 51-36 lead with 1:41 to go.
Brown finished with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds to record her fifth double-double of the year. Brown also paced all players with four steals.
Lewis leads EMU women to win at Lynchburg

After ending a three-game losing skid the night before, the EMU women’s basketball team looked to build another winning streak with a road game at Lynchburg Saturday night. The women had a rocky first half before controlling the Hornets in the second and grabbing a 60-56 win.
Eastern Mennonite scored the first seven points, capped by pair of Melissa Lewis (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft) free throws. But Lynchburg took control and spurted to a 22-11 lead by the 9:05 mark.
The Hornets led by as many as 15 in the half, at 31-16, but EMU ended the half on a 12-2 run to trail by five at the break, 33-28. Read more
Brown’s 11 points, solid all-around game lift Liberty

Liberty junior Avery Warley played one of her best games of the season, Saturday evening at Charleston Southern, pacing all players in both points (18) and rebounds (16). Her effort sparked the Lady Flames to a 65-52 Big South win at the CSU Field House.
Four of Liberty’s five starters scored in double figures, as the Lady Flames won their sixth straight game. Liberty is now 13-4 overall and 4-1 in the Big South, after defeating the Buccaneers for the 26th consecutive time.
Charleston Southern, which never led in the contest, drops to 9-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
2008 Waynesboro High School grad Devon Brown enjoyed a solid all-around effort, tallying 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and a trio of steals, while sinking the Lady Flames’ only three-pointer of the contest.
Another blowout win for Liberty

Another strong defensive effort and balanced scoring helped Liberty complete a 5-0 homestand Monday evening at the Vines Center. The Lady Flames came up with four steals and put four players in double figures during their 82-40 Big South win over UNC Asheville.
Liberty is now 12-4 overall and 3-1 in Big South play, after winning its 17th straight conference home game. The Lady Flames held the Bulldogs to 27.5 percent (14-of-51) shooting from the floor, marking the 100th consecutive game Liberty has kept its opponent from making 50 percent of its field goals. A pair of 15-0 first-half runs by Liberty set the tone for Saturday afternoon’s Big South contest against Presbyterian College. The Lady Flames went on to claim a 73-27 victory over the Blue Hose, extending their winning streak to four games.
An active, aggressive defense keyed the Liberty victory, as a season-high 19 steals led to 39 points off turnovers. The Lady Flames improve to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in Big South action. Liberty, now 4-0 during its current homestand, has won 41 straight January home tilts. Read more

Liberty broke open a defensive struggle with an 18-0 run on to post its first conference victory of the 2009-10 season by a 67-38 margin over Winthrop at the Vines Center on Saturday.
Liberty, now 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the Big South, have now won 18 consecutive home meetings with the Eagles and 39 straight January home games. Winthrop falls to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play, after losing for the fourth time in its last six games. Read more

Freshmen Devon Brown and Jelena Antic combined for 31 points and 17 rebounds, Tuesday evening at the Vines Center, helping Liberty claim a 57-51 victory over North Carolina A&T.
The Lady Flames withstood several late comeback attempts by the defending MEAC champions, snapping a two-game losing streak. Liberty, now 8-4 overall, extended several streaks in its first home game in a month. The Lady Flames have won seven straight meetings with the Aggies, 30 consecutive contests against MEAC foes and 38 straight January home games. Read more
