Lynchburg holds off late Bridgewater rally, wins 66-62
Lynchburg College held off a late Bridgewater rally Saturday afternoon to defeat the Eagles, 66-62, in ODAC action.
Lynchburg jumped out to an early 13-1 lead as the Eagles failed to score a field goal in the first eight minutes of action.
The Hornets took their biggest lead of half on a layup by Austin Chillemi with 3:43 left, making the score 32-15.
The Eagles then caught fire and scored the final 14 points of the half to trail by just three, 32-29, at the break.
The Eagles took their first lead of the game when Ed Reddick made two free throws for a 34-33 advantage with 17:21 left. Read more
Burroughs three-ball wins it in overtime for Royals
The young Runnin Royals have needed a big win to get the ball rolling. Wednesday night they may have gotten it.
Sophomore Adam Burroughs (Roanoke, VA/Northside) shook off a cold-shooting night and nailed the game-winning three pointer with 2.1 seconds left in overtime, as Eastern Mennonite earned a hard-fought 78-75 win from Lynchburg. The guard scored EMU’s final seven points as they never trailed in OT.
The Royals move to 9-11 overall and 4-7 in the league, after taking the win from the ODAC’s fifth-place team. The men are now in a three-way tie for sixth with Washington and Lee University and Randolph College. Read more
EMU women rally, improve to 8-1
Despite some early game rust, the Eastern Mennonite basketball women controlled the second half against Lynchburg Tuesday night, taking an 81-72 ODAC win in Harrisonburg.
After EMU got the first bucket of the game, the Hornets took over and led by as many as ten in the first half at 25-15. Sophomore Stephanie Rheinheimer (Manheim, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) then canned a three pointer to start the women on their comeback.
Lynchburg got a bucket but Marla Young (Fishersville, VA/Wilson Memorial) nailed a triple and Bianca Ygarza (Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) followed with a three-point play to slash the lead to three points. An offensive putback and another layup capped a 13-2 run as the Royals took the lead for the first time since the opening minute.
The Hornets settled down and retook the edge, heading into halftime on top 38-37. Read more
Brown named Big South Player of the Week

After helping Liberty win a pair of road games and claim a share of the Big South lead, redshirt freshman Devon Brown has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Brown (G, Waynesboro, Va.) led the Lady Flames in both scoring (24.5 ppg) and rebounding (11.0 rpg) last week, collecting a pair of double-doubles. Her efforts helped Liberty complete a 4-0 road swing, with victories at High Point and Radford.
High Point entered Saturday’s game at the Millis Center as the Big South Conference co-leader and built a 41-34 halftime lead. Brown then stepped up in the second half, recording 19 of her career-high 29 points and collecting eight of her 11 rebounds during the final 20 minutes of play. She single-handedly matched the Panthers’ second-half rebounding total and rejected two High Point shots during a 75-62 Liberty triumph. Read more

Liberty broke open a tight game with an 11-2 run to close the first half of Monday evening’s game at Radford. The Lady Flames maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way, claiming a share of first place in the Big South standings with a 63-45 triumph at the Dedmon Center.
2008 Waynesboro High School graduate Devon Brown led three Liberty players in double figures with 20 points, helping the Lady Flames post their ninth straight victory. Liberty is now 16-4 overall and 7-1 in the Big South, putting the Lady Flames in a tie with Gardner-Webb atop the conference ledger.
Radford, which had won four of its last five home games, shot only 29.4 percent on the evening. The Highlanders fall to 5-14 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

The weather outside the Millis Center Saturday afternoon was cold and snowy, but Liberty remained hot, extending its winning streak to eight. Devon Brown and Avery Warley both posted career-high point totals during the Lady Flames’ come-from-behind 75-62 win over Big South co-leader High Point.
Brown, a 2008 Waynesboro High School graduate, totaled 29 points and 11 rebounds, while reigning Big South Player of the Week Warley added 26 points and 14 boards. Their efforts helped Liberty improve to 15-4 overall and 6-1 in the Big South.
The Lady Flames now sit in second place in the conference standings, one-half game behind Big South leader Gardner-Webb. Read more

The Liberty Flames used a 66-32 advantage in points in the paint and a 53-25 rebounding margin to prevail, 91-73, over the visiting VMI Keydets Thursday night in a Big South contest played at the Vines Center in Lynchburg, Va.
Despite a 27-12 halftime rebounding edge, the homestanding Flames’ lead was just 42-37 at the intermission, but Liberty came out of the locker room with a 9-2 run to open the second half and take a 51-39 advantage with 17:05 to play.
VMI eventually rallied to climb back within nine with three minutes to play, but the Flames went on a 9-0 run to put the game away. Read more
