VMI baseball drops series finale to Youngstown State
Jeremy Banks hit two home runs, including a tie-breaking three-run shot in the eighth inning, helping the Youngstown State Penguins defeat the VMI Keydets, 10-2, Sunday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium.
After Banks’ first inning home run, the combination of starter Jeremy Brown and reliever Travis Thomas had kept the Penguins (1-12) off the scoreboard into the eighth, and VMI had a slim 2-1 lead. The first two batters of the eighth reached against Thomas, and the Keydets (6-8) summoned Michael Devine to face Banks. The first baseman hit a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall, giving YSU a lead that it would not relinquish. The two long balls gave Banks three on the weekend, five on the season and raised his average to .481 over the Penguins’ 13 2012 contests. Read more
VMI rolls Youngstown State, 11-3
Rob Dickinson went 3 for 3 with two RBI, and Gary LeClair was 2 for 4 with three runs driven in as the VMI Keydets defeated the Youngstown State Penguins, 11-3, Saturday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium.
LeClair had the key hit in VMI’s three-run second inning, an uprising that put the Keydets in front for good. With two outs, Chase Worthington singled to right. That started a run of five straight hitters that would reach base, and Nick Dwyer drove in the game’s first run with a single through the left side. One batter later, LeClair singled up the middle to plate two, and give VMI a 3-0 lead. Read more
VMI takes opener with Youngstown State, 9-4
Jacob Morley had three hits, including a tie-breaking single in the fifth, and Andrew Montague homered to lead the VMI Keydets past the Youngstown State Penguins, 9-4, in non-conference baseball action Friday at Gray-Minor Stadium.
With the teams locked in a 3-3, fifth-inning tie, Matt Winn reached on an error with one out. Gary LeClair then doubled down the left field line, advancing Winn to third, and Morley followed with a two-run single to right center, putting VMI ahead for good. Read more
#16 Lehigh knocks off VMI lax, 6-2
After 10 days off, the VMI lacrosse team made some key adjustments, which helped the Keydets hang tough with No. 16 Lehigh University on Tuesday afternoon. The Keydets fell 6-2 to the newly-ranked Mountain Hawks, backed by a 13 save effort from VMI’s netminder, J Rice.
“What a difference 10 days makes,” said VMI head man Brian Anken, whose team suffered a difficult 12-4 loss on Feb. 25 to Saint Joseph’s. “Just getting some time to really take a step back, reanalyze some systematic things … some personnel adjustments. VMI baseball loses to W&M, 6-2
Jay McCarthy pitched seven shutout innings for William & Mary, helping the visiting Tribe to a 6-2 win over the VMI Keydets Tuesday night at Gray-Minor Stadium.
McCarthy (1-1) gave up three hits and did not walk a batter over his seven frames, earning his first win of the season for W&M (8-5). Andrew Montague paced the Keydets (4-7) with two hits, including a ninth-inning RBI single. Read more
Asheville ends VMI’s NCAA bid
No. 1 seed UNC Asheville placed five players in double figures and used a 20-12 run the final 10 minutes to pull away with an 80-64 win over No. 7 seed VMI and capture the 2012 Advance Auto Parts Big South Men’s Basketball Championship Saturday at Kimmel Arena. With the win, the Bulldogs win their second consecutive Big South Tournament title and receive the Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Asheville (24-9) is the League’s first back-to-back champion since Winthrop won four-straight from 2005-08, and is the first No. 1 seed to win the title since 2009. Read more
VMI upsets Coastal in Big South tourney
Fueled by 14 three-pointers and a 57% field goal percentage, the #7 VMI Keydets upset the #2 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 85-68, in the quarterfinals of the Advance Auto Parts Big South Basketball Championship, contested Wednesday in Asheville, N.C.
