JMU welcomes 21 international senior mine-action managers

Senior mine-action managers from 14 countries are coming to JMU for a five-week session of courses focusing on effective management and communication skills. The eighth Senior Managers Course will begin Wednesday, May 16 and run through June 16.

This year’s participants are coming from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Laos, Lebanon, Libya, Sudan, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Uganda and Vietnam. Read more

Late HR lifts VCU past JMU

First baseman Brent Mikionis smacked a two-out, two-run home run in the ninth inning to lift VCU to a 10-8 win past James Madison in the final game of a Colonial Athletic Association weekend baseball series on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.

VCU improved to 30-22 for the season and clinched a spot in the six-team CAA championship with a 15-15 league slate.  JMU fell to 16-31-2 overall and 10-17 in the league.  The Dukes maintain a slim chance at reaching the tournament, but they need a sweep of Towson along with help in three other league series. VCU takes game two from JMU, 9-3

Seth Cutler-Voltz tossed a complete game  while Joey Cujas and Vimael Machin paced the offense in a 9-3 VCU win over James Madison to even a Colonial Athletic Association baseball series at one game apiece on Saturday night at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.

VCU improved to 29-22 overall and 14-15 in the CAA.  JMU fell to 16-30-2 overall and 10-16 in conference play. Read more

JMU wins in walkoff fashion in opener with VCU

Junior second baseman Casey Goss (Springfield, Mo./Glendale) lined a three-run home run off the top of the fence to cap a five-run inning and make James Madison an instant winner, 13-11, over VCU in the opening game of a Colonial Athletic Association baseball series on Friday night at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.

With the win, JMU improved to 16-29-2 overall and 10-15 in the CAA with nine wins in its last 13 conference games.  VCU, which had won seven of its last 10 games, fell to 28-22 overall and 13-15 in the league. Read more

JMU-Radford ends in 3-3 tie

James Madison and Radford battled to a 3-3 tie through five innings before rain and lightning delayed and ultimately ended the non-conference baseball contest on Tuesday evening at the RU Baseball Field.

JMU actually took the lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by freshman Aaron Hoover (Centreville, Va./Westfield) before the game went into the delay.  With the game unable to resume, by rule any runs in an incomplete inning that affect the outcome are negated, resulting in the 3-3 tie. Newlyweds to graduate from JMU

A little less than a year ago, Robert and Cassie Frysinger wed in an amphitheater on the JMU campus. Tonight, Cassie Frysinger will graduate with a master’s degree in integrated science and technology. Her husband, Robert Frysinger, will be awarded his bachelor’s degree in ISAT on Saturday morning.

Among the proud guests will be Robert’s parents, both teachers in the ISAT program. Steve Frysinger is a professor of both ISAT and computer science while Carollyn Oglesby is a scholar in residence who teaches study abroad courses in Germany during summers. Read more

JMU’s first engineers getting job, grad-school offers

It has been four years since they entered a program unlike any other in Virginia, and the results indicate they made a good choice.

Of the 45 students who make up the inaugural class of the JMU School of Engineering, 24 already have secured full-time engineering jobs. Another 12 will be heading off to graduate school. The schools they will be going to include the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Cornell, Pennsylvania State University, Arizona State University and the University of Delaware. Read more
