JMU holds off Towson, 58-56
Towson erased an 18-point first-half deficit but junior guard Devon Moore (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) scored six points in the final 90 seconds as James Madison recovered for a 58-56 Colonial Athletic Association win on Saturday afternoon at Towson Center Arena.
JMU snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 11-16 overall and 4-11 in the league. Towson dropped to 1-26 overall and 1-14 in the CAA.
The Dukes controlled most of the first half, leading by as many as 18 at 28-10 and ahead 36-21 at the break. Towson started the second half on an 8-2 run to work its way back into the game, cutting the margin to single digits for the first time since the early minutes of the game. Read more
JMU women beat Drexel in OT
James Madison junior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) scored 10 of the Dukes’ final 15 points to lead JMU to a 56-51 overtime win at Drexel in Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball Thursday night at the Daskalaskis Center.
The Dukes, who won their third straight, improved their overall record to 18-5 and their CAA record to 10-3. With Hofstra’s loss at Virginia Commonwealth Thursday night, JMU claimed sole possession of second place in the league standings. Read more
Chris Graham: Winding down the Matt Brady era at JMU
A 21-12 record for Matt Brady’s third JMU basketball team in 2010-2011 gave the coach a tiny space for breathing room.
It was Brady’s second 20-plus-win season, sure, but neither of those teams qualified for NCAA or NIT postseason play. And at James Madison, where the Lou Campanelli/Lefty Driesell years are maybe a fading memory, but a memory nontheless, being in position to play into March is still something that the alums want to think that they can expect.
Six losses in seven games have turned what had been a decent 7-4 start to the 2011-2012 campaign into a 10-16 nightmare. And it’s soon going to be decision time for Madison athletics director Jeff Bourne, who four years ago faced a similar decision with Dean Keener. Read more
JMU loses … again
Guard Frantz Massenat scored 16 points while forward Samme Givens added 14 points and 13 rebounds to pace Drexel past James Madison 63-56 in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball game Wednesday night at the JMU Convocation Center.
Drexel improved to 20-5 overall for its second straight 20-win season and remained in a three-way tie for first place in the CAA at 12-2. The Dragons won their 12th game in a row after entering the night with the nation’s fifth-longest winning streak and also won for the 18th time in 19 games. JMU fell to 10-16 with its fifth straight loss and dropped to 3-12 in the conference. Read more
JMU identified as ‘Best Value’ college by Princeton Review
James Madison University’s “impressive balance of educational, social and extracurricular activities to enrich students’ experience” earned the school a place in the Princeton Review’s “The Best Value Colleges: 2012 Edition,” subtitled “The 150 Best Buy Colleges and What It Takes to Get In.”
The annual guide features profiles of 75 public and 75 private colleges with detailed information about their campus culture, facilities and financial aid offerings. Of the 75 schools in each group, the top 10 colleges are ranked 1 to 10, and the remaining 65 are listed in alphabetical order and unranked. Read more
JMU Alpha Phis partner with RMH to fight women’s heart disease
The James Madison University Theta Iota chapter of Alpha Phi will host its annual “Move You Phi’t” 5K walk/run to benefit RMH Heart Check at 10 a.m. Feb. 25.
Registration and check-in will take place at 9 a.m. on the bottom floor of the JMU Festival Center.
Funds raised from the event will be used to offer free heart health screenings, said RMH Heart Health Navigator Maria Hostetter, RN. Read more
JMU women beat Mason
James Madison held its eighth opponent under 50 points as the Dukes beat visiting George Mason 49-45 in Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Dukes improved their overall record to 16-5 and their CAA record to 8-3. JMU’s win, combined with Hofstra’s loss to Old Dominion Sunday, moved the Dukes into a tie with Hofstra for second place in the CAA.
George Mason’s record now stands at 11-11 overall and 5-6 in the CAA. Read more
JMU drops fourth straight
Forward Jamelle Hagins and guard Devon Saddler posted 23 and 22 points, respectively, as Delaware held off James Madison’s second-half charge to post an 85-80 Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball win on Saturday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
Delaware improved to 11-12 overall and 7-6 in the CAA while JMU dropped to 10-15 overall and 3-10 in the league with its fourth straight loss.
Hagins finished with a career-high 23 points and 18 rebounds for 12th double-double of the season to go along with four blocks. He was 7-for-12 from the field and 9-for-13 at the foul line. Saddler added 22 points on 9-of-19 shooting. Jarvis Threatt and Kyle Anderson chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Blue Hens. Read more
ODU shoots past JMU, 80-71
Old Dominion made 13 of 25 three-point attempts and dominated the glass 47-29 to earn an 80-71 Colonial Athletic Association win over James Madison University at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va., on Thursday night.
ODU won its fourth straight and for the eighth time in its last night games to improve to 15-9 overall and pull into a four-way tie atop the CAA at 10-2. JMU dropped its third straight to fall to 10-14 and 3-9 in the league.
Senior forward Chris Cooper grabbed a career-high and Ted Constant Center record 22 rebounds while adding 10 points for the double-double. Senior guard Kent Bazemore led six Monarchs in double figures with 19 points, adding five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Dimitri Batten made four three-pointers for 13 points and Donte Hill and Trian Iliadis added 11 points each while Nick Wright contributed 10 points. Read more

Junior guard Tarik Hislop’s (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) driving shot off the glass dropped in the basket with 3.7 seconds left to lift James Madison to a 57-55 win at Old Dominion in Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball Wednesday night at the Constant Convocation Center.
The Dukes rallied from 14 points down in the second half for the win, which improved JMU’s overall record to 16-5 and its CAA record to 7-3. ODU dropped to 7-15 overall and 4-6 in league play. Read more
JMU announces 2012 football signing class
James Madison University has signed 14 to National Letters of Intent to play football for the Dukes next fall, Head Coach Mickey Matthews announced today.
The class includes two players (Titus Till and Jeremiah Wilson) that are already attending JMU and will be a part of spring practices. Of the signees, Madison remained strong through the region, signing eight out of Virginia, four from Maryland and one each from Delaware and New Jersey. Read more
JMU loses at East Tennessee State, 70-56
East Tennessee State’s defensive pressure forced 23 James Madison turnovers with 18 steals as the hosts recorded a 70-56 win in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Monday night at the Mountain States Health Alliance Athletics Center.
ETSU snapped a three-game losing skid to improve to 11-10 overall while JMU fell to 10-13.
The Buccaneers entered the night ranked second in the nation averaging 10.3 steals per game and 23rd with a 3.4 turnover margin. They forced nine turnovers in the first eight minutes of the game to race out to a 20-5 lead. Read more
