BACK TO BACK, THREE OUT OF FOUR: It had been 26 years since Virginia had posted back-to-back losing seasons. Saturday’s 14-10 loss to Boston College guarantees the ’09 season as the back end of back-to-back losing campaigns for Al Groh.
It’s also three losing seasons in four for Virginia. The Cavs were 5-7 in 2006, 9-4 in 2007, 5-7 in 2008 and are 3-7 with two games to play in 2009.

Groh: Hall will start … at punt returner

Still no word on who Virginia will be starting at quarterback Saturday in the season opener at home against William & Mary. But we do now know that Vic Hall will be returning punts.

“That’s one thing we know for sure, that we will have Vic back there returning,” UVa. coach Al Groh told reporters on Monday.

Hall at QB? And more from Groh on the eve of spring practice

Vic Hall was a record-setting quarterback in high school, and his numbers – 13,770 total yards, 166 touchdowns – had Virginia fans salivating at the prospect of what he could do in the ACC. A surprise start at QB in the season finale at Virginia Tech last November that pushed the Cavs to the brink of an upset of the eventual Orange Bowl champions got the message boards going about why he had been used at corner primarily his first three years in Charlottesville, but it did something else for coach Al Groh. The bell tolls for the Grohs

The next time Mike Groh has an offense ranked in the top 100 in I-A will, unfortunately for Virginia fans, be the first time. And keep in mind, there are 119 I-A football teams, so we’re only talking about cracking the top 83 percent of offenses here.
But don’t be Mark Berman of The Roanoke Times and dare to ask the question after a three-point, 190-yards-of-total-offense, nausea-inducing performance in a must-win game at home against Clemson about whether or not the offensive coordinator will be back next year.
