EMU, Catholic offer joint engineering program
Eastern Mennonite University has partnered with Catholic University of America for a new dual degree program that will prepare students to pursue peacebuilding and sustainability through engineering.
“We envision the dual degree program as one that will allow students to embrace the Anabaptist mission and vision that EMU espouses while also obtaining the training needed to put their skills to work as an engineer,” said Deirdre Smeltzer, PhD, chair of mathematical sciences. Read more
Valley Playhouse presents Harvey
Harvey by playwright Mary Chase will be presented by The Valley Playhouse on June 7-10 and June 14-17 at the Court Square Theater in Downtown Harrisonburg.

Longwood tops JMU, 4-1
Left fielder Robby Newman hit a pair of home runs while five Longwood pitchers combined to limit James Madison to six hits in a 4-1 win in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday evening at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
Longwood improved to 24-20 overall while JMU fell to 16-32-2 in its 50th game of the season. Read more
Shenandoah National Park hosts regional conference
Shenandoah National Park and its neighboring communities will host a one-day conference, Connecting for Prosperity – Charting the Future Together, on May 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at James Madison University in Harrisonburg.
The workshop-style conference will include presentations by guest panelists, case studies, and facilitated discussions to help identify the region’s shared goals and to build an awareness of the economic potential for the area. Read more
Jeff Tyson set to head EMU women’s volleyball program
Eastern Mennonite University has announced the hiring of Jeff Tyson as head women’s volleyball coach.
Tyson comes to EMU from Marion, Ind., when he has been heavily involved in the region’s volleyball scene, including four years as an assistant coach at Indiana Wesleyan University. Read more
JMU welcomes 21 international senior mine-action managers
Senior mine-action managers from 14 countries are coming to JMU for a five-week session of courses focusing on effective management and communication skills. The eighth Senior Managers Course will begin Wednesday, May 16 and run through June 16.
This year’s participants are coming from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Laos, Lebanon, Libya, Sudan, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Uganda and Vietnam. Read more
Late HR lifts VCU past JMU
First baseman Brent Mikionis smacked a two-out, two-run home run in the ninth inning to lift VCU to a 10-8 win past James Madison in the final game of a Colonial Athletic Association weekend baseball series on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
VCU improved to 30-22 for the season and clinched a spot in the six-team CAA championship with a 15-15 league slate. JMU fell to 16-31-2 overall and 10-17 in the league. The Dukes maintain a slim chance at reaching the tournament, but they need a sweep of Towson along with help in three other league series. Read more
