Mason holds off Hofstra, 55-50
Sophomore Sherrod Wright scored a team-high 15 points, including the game-winning three-point play, and the George Mason men’s basketball team held off Hofstra, 55-50, on Wednesday at the Mack Sports Complex.
Mason stays atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings at 9-1 in conference play and 17-5 overall, while the Pride dropped to 7-15 (1-9 CAA).
Wright was one of two Patriots in double figures, as sophomore Jonathan Arledge added 10 points including a 6-for-6 performance at the charity stripe. Senior Ryan Pearson pulled down a game high 10 rebounds, leading the Mason effort which held a 40-to-27 advantage off the glass. Mike Moore scored 18 points to pace the Pride. Read more
Mason holds off Towson, 72-60
Redshirt sophomore Sherrod Wright scored a season-high 22 points, two off his career best, as the George Mason men’s basketball team held off a pesky Towson squad, 72-60, on Saturday afternoon at the Patriot Center.
Mason improved to 15-5 and 7-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play as the Patriots maintained at least a share of first place, while the Tigers dropped to 0-20 overall and 0-8 in conference play.
Wright was the lone Patriot in double-figure scoring, while three Tigers reached the mark led by 19 from Marcus Damas. Towson controlled the boards, owning a 45-34 rebounding advantage, but the Patriots won the shooting stat with a 45.5 percent clip from the field, compared to 37.1 percent field goal shooting by the Tigers. Mason cooks Blue Hens, 89-63
With an explosive start to its three-game homestand, the George Mason men’s basketball team scored quickly and cruised to a 89-63 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Delaware on Wednesday night at the Patriot Center. Mason’s win keeps the Patriots atop the conference standings at 6-1 (14-5 overall), while the Blue Hens dropped to 3-4 in the CAA and 7-10 overall.
A pair of Mason seniors led the way, as Ryan Pearson posted his seventh double-double of the season with game-highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds. Classmate Mike Morrison added 17 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Bryon Allen chipped in 12. Mason out-shot the Blue Hens by a 54.4-to-36.7 percent margin and turned UD over 16 times, compared to eight turnovers for the Patriots. Devon Saddler led the Blue Hens with 21 points. Read more
Drexel knocks off George Mason, 60-53
The George Mason men’s basketball team suffered its first conference defeat of the season on Thursday night, falling at Drexel, 60-53, before a capacity crowd at the Daskalakis Center. The loss for the Patriots (12-5, 4-1 CAA) snaps a five-game winning streak and a conference-record 18 straight victories in CAA play. Drexel improved to 11-5 and 3-2 in conference in the two teams’ lone matchup this season.
Freshman Eric Copes had a historic night, blocking seven shots which ties for the second-best single-game performance by a Patriot. All of his rejections came in the first half, while senior Mike Morrison led the Patriot offense with 10 points. Classmate Ryan Pearson had a game-high 11 rebounds, despite a 41-to-30 Dragons advantage off the glass. Damion Lee scored 21 points, all but five in the second half, to lead the Drexel offense. Mason secures sole possession of first in CAA with win at Georgia State
The George Mason men’s basketball team withstood a furious charge late to hold off Georgia State, 61-58, in Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday evening at the Patriot Center. The win gives Mason (12-4, 4-0 CAA) sole possession of first place in the conference standings while snapping GSU’s 11-game winning streak, as the Panthers dropped to 11-4 and 3-1 in league play.
Senior Mike Morrison posted a double-double with a career-high 15 rebounds and 14 points, while redshirt sophomore Vertrail Vaughns scored a team-high 17 points while senior Ryan Pearson contributed 10 points, all of which coming from the free throw line. Mason knocks off ODU
Immediately after their victory on Monday afternoon over William & Mary, the George Mason men’s basketball senior class told their teammates in the locker room the importance of a victory on Thursday at Old Dominion. The Patriots took it to heart, as they pulled off a nearly wire-to-wire 63-54 victory over the Monarchs before 7,783 fans at the Constant Center.
It was just the second win for Mason (11-4, 3-0 CAA) in the building, and the first since 2004. The Monarchs, previously unbeaten in CAA play, dropped to 2-1 while falling to 7-8 overall.
Two Mason seniors led the way, as Ryan Pearson collected his sixth double-double of the year while Mike Morrison fell one rebound short along with 10 points. Pearson, meanwhile, had 16 points along with a game-high 14 rebounds. Joining the duo in double figures was sophomores Bryon Allen and Vertrail Vaughns, who chipped in 14 and 13 points respectively. Kent Bazemore had 17 points to pace the Monarch offense, which was plagued by 29.5 percent field goal shooting compared to a 42.9 percent clip by the Patriots. Read more
