Gateway to offer group-dance lessons

Steve Shergold of Shergold Studio in Charlottesville will begin dance lessons at the Gateway on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.

Shergold taught salsa lessons before the Gateway performance by the Afro-Caribbean band, Orquesta Tropikiimba in August and found the Gateway a perfect venue for teaching dance.

“I am looking forward to teaching four-week sessions in Waynesboro,” said Shergold.

The fee for the four-week course of beginner salsa lessons is $40 per person, paid in advance.  Men will receive a 50 percent discount.

Shergold is the founder and owner of Shergold Studio located in Charlottesville. He has assisted in the development of choreography and training of actors / extras for TV soaps, and for TV films and stage including sword fight choreography.

Shergold has 12 years experience with training dancers for social dance, special events such as weddings and quinceañeras and has produced award-winning competitors. His specialty is teaching the genuine lead and follow technique and not just dance patterns. Classes are informative, educational, entertaining and fun.

Open Mic Night at Gateway

Starting in September, WTA’s Gateway will offer Open Mic Night with Lorie Strother: The Dreaded Blues Lady.  The Open-Mic Night will take place on the fourth Thursday of the month. The performances begin at 7 pm.  The first Open-Mic Night is scheduled for Sept. 22.

Open Mic Nights will have a featured performer followed by a maximum of ten local performers who sign up to demonstrate their talents.  The local performers are limited to two songs or 10 minutes.  The performers must sign up for the night by calling WTA’s office, 540-943-9999.

Lorie Strother, The Dreaded Blues Lady, is a woman of many talents.  She is best known for her interpretation of early acoustic blues.   She performs regularly in the Mid-Atlantic region with her guitarist, Dr. Stephen Levine.  Lorie also has a interest in discovering and mentoring new talents.  The Open-Mic Night is her opportunity to reach out into the Central Virginia community and provide a stage for local talents.

World-class illusionist at the Gateway

Wayne Alan, nationally recognized magician and illusionist will bring his one-person show to the Gateway on Saturday, September 10, at 7:30 pm.

Mr. Alan will be presenting his touring show, Magic of the Masters-The World’s Most Famous Illusions, a modern look at Magic’s Golden Oldies.  It is filled with lots of fun and comedy and features spectators from the audience as assistants in the illusions.  He will perform his version of levitation on stage, called Lighter than Air with a lady from the audience.

Wayne Alan is a World Champion Illusionist and the only American to ever win the gold medal for grand illusion at the International Olympics of Magic.  He has performed on national TV on Entertainment Tonight, MTV, Inside Edition, Good Morning America, ABC, NBC and CBS Network News programs.  He’s also appeared with Oprah Winfrey, Larry King and Maury Povich.   He has acted as a consultant for David Copperfield.  Mr. Alan has performed thirteen times at the White House.

Wayne Alan is the first magician to write a cookbook.  It is titled Magical Meatless Meals-Famous Foods from Famous People and Places.  It includes recipes from many of the wonderful restaurants and hotels that he has had the pleasure of dining at in his travels around the world.  It also features recipes of favorite dishes of celebrities he has performed with.  Magic tricks that can be performed at the dinner table are taught and sprinkled throughout the book.  Mr. Alan will be happy to autograph books after the show.

Opening weekend at The Gateway

The Wayne Theatre Alliance announced the ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new entertainment center, The Gateway, at 329 West Main in Downtown Waynesboro on Friday, Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. The public is invited for a first look at the new venue.

The ribbon-cutting will include the members of the Wayne Theatre Alliance, Waynesboro Downtown Development Inc. the Greater Augusta Chamber of Commerce, local dignitaries and supporters of WTA.

The Gateway will seat up to 140. The double tiered stage, lighting and sound systems will make the Gateway an ideal space for a variety of entertainments and educational programming. The space will have its own box office and concession areas and a large meeting room at the rear.

The Gateway will open on Aug. 6 with a potpourri of talents, including comedy and classical, folk, and jazz music. Ivy Rowe, a one-woman performance by Barbara Smith, will occupy the space on Friday, Aug. 12, as part of the Mountain Music Festival. The River City Radio Hour return for its fourth season on Friday, Aug. 19 followed by Orquestra Tropikiima on Saturday, Aug. 20. The first month ends with Comedy Tonight on Friday, Aug. 26 and Brent Hull and Joe Tyree from Maybe Tomorrow on Saturday, Aug. 27.
