FMS rallies, knocks off Southern Tech, 80-71

Southern Tech led by 16 points with 9:10 to go, but Fishburne had an answer.

The Caisson postgrads held Southern Tech to five points the rest of the way, and took the lead for good on a Jackson Trapp three-pointer with 1:22 to go en route to posting an improbable 80-71 win Friday night on the opening night of the Fishburne Caisson PG Classic.

Tech led by as many as 12 points in the first half before FMS (23-8) rallied in the late stages to take a 38-37 lead at the break on a jumper from the left corner by Trapp just before the buzzer. It remained close in the second half until an 18-3 Southern Tech run opened up a 66-50 lead at the 9:10 mark. Read more

FMS hoops coach on WKAV

Fishburne Military School postgrad basketball coach Ed Huckaby joins
WKAV-1400′s “The Mac McDonald Show” to talk about the signing by UVa.
of FMS point guard Teven Jones.

FMS point guard enrolling early at UVa.

Bad news for Fishburne, good news for UVa. basketball: Star point guard Teven Jones is enrolling at the University of Virginia this week and will join the UVa. basketball program as a redshirt freshman.

“I really want to thank everybody here at Fishburne for the opportunities that I’ve been given. This is a big day for me. Everybody dreams of going to college, and now that day is here for me,” said Jones, a postgraduate student from Kannapolis, N.C., who signed a letter of intent with UVa. in November.

FMS postgrad coach Ed Huckaby initiated the move after news broke over the holidays that the 16th-ranked Cavaliers were losing a pair of second-year players, guard KT Harrell and center James Johnson, both of whom decided to transfer at the end of the first semester of the 2011-2012 school year. FMS rolls over Southern Tech Prep, 80-53

The first time Southern Tech Prep was in Waynesboro, the Wildcats jumped out to a 13-2 lead before the Caissons were able to rally. There was no need for a rally from the postgrads Monday night.

FMS jumped out to a 16-0 cushion six minutes in and coasted from there to an 80-53 win.

Defense was the key. The Caissons (12-4) had come in having given up an average of 94 points per game in a three-game stretch that included back-to-back losses to Massanutten and Hargrave. Read more

FMS PGs lose thriller

With UVa. head coach Tony Bennett watching, top recruit Teven Jones tried to lead a Fishburne comeback against rival Massanutten Military Academy, but the rally came up short as the Colonels held on for a 101-95 win Saturday night.

Jones had 19 of his 22 points in the second half against a possible future Virginia teammate. MMA point guard Corban Collins has become a subject of interest on the University of Virginia recruiting radar, and if there is interest by Bennett and his staff in Collins, that interest would have only been stoked after the 6’3″, 190-pounder threw down 37 points, including the biggest points of the game at the 4:05 mark on a three-point play that broke an 82-82 tie.

A Terry Brutus stickback at the 3:34 mark made it 87-82 MMA, and it was 89-86 Massanutten with 2:30 to go when Jones missed the front end of a one-and-one. Another Brutus post bucket made it 91-86 MMA, and Jones missed two free throws after being fouled on a drive in the lane.

Collins made one of two free throws to extend the lead to 92-86, and Brutus scored on a stickback after rebounding the missed second free throw and was fouled. The three-point play made it 95-86 Massanutten with 41 seconds to go, and Fishburne never got closer than five after that.

Spencer Parker (a Bowling Green signee) had 20 points and Mo Camera (a Winston-Salem State signee) added 16 points for Fishburne, which falls to 10-3 on the season with the loss.

FMS PGs hold off game Bridgewater JV squad, 81-62

The Fishburne Military School postgrad basketball team trailed by as many as 11 points in a ragged first half, but the Caissons took control with a 16-0 second-half run en route to an 81-62 win over the Bridgewater College JV team.

“I think our pressure just started wearing them down,” FMS assistant coach Derrick Robinson said afterward.

The pressure early on was on Fishburne (10-2) as the Eagles raced out to an early 12-3 lead and led for all but 20 seconds of the first half. Point guard Teven Jones (a UVa. signee) got in early foul trouble and rode the bench for most of the first half, and the Caissons seemed to have a hard time getting their bearings straight without their leader on the floor.

A 12-2 run late in the first half gave FMS its only lead of the opening 20 minutes at 39-37 on a jumper by Jackson Trapp.

A runner in the lane by Khalil Alford (a Rider signee) gave Fishburne the lead for good at 45-43 at the 16:40 mark of the second half. Those two points started the 16-0 run that ended with a pair of free throws by Cortell Busby that put the Caissons ahead 59-43 with 12:20 to go, and Fishburne led by double digits the rest of the way.

Alford led four Fishburne players in double figures with 17 points. Jones and Jackson Trapp (a Winthrop signee) each had 15 points. Mo Camera (a Winston-Salem State signee) added 12 points.

FMS outlasts Wytheville, 112-94

The Fishburne postgrad basketball team raced out to a 21-point lead in the first 10 minutes against Wytheville Community College and cruised from there en route to a 112-94 win Thursday night.

Not that the Caissons were fond of the cruise-in afterwards or anything.

“That was a bad defensive effort. We’re really not supposed to give up more than 50 points,” said point guard Teven Jones (a UVa. signee), who scored 11 points in limited action after picking up three fouls in the first half and his fourth five minutes into the second half.

“Offensively we played all right. Defensively, we’ve got to do a lot better than that,” said Jones’ backup, Cortell Busby (an IUPUI signee).

A Karl Ziegler field goal with 10:40 left in the first half gave FMS (7-0) a 33-12 lead, and it was 37-16 on a pair of free throws by Busby two minutes later when Wytheville responded with a 12-2 run that cut the margin to 11 at 39-28 on a jumper by Antoine Bryant at the 6:09 mark.

A fadeaway at the buzzer by Chris Bryant (a Florida Atlantic signee) made it 60-41 at the half, and the Caissons led by as many as 23 in the second half on their way to the big win.

“They made some big shots. It’s nothing we need to harp on. Sometimes that happens. It’s the game of basketball,” FMS coach Ed Huckaby said.

Bryant led five Fishburne players in double figures with 21 points. Matt Gorski added 17 and Ziegler had 16.
