A real free choice
George Waksmunski has seen it happen. “Workers are terrorized when they attempt to organize a union,” said Waksmunski, the national representative for UE Local 123 in Verona. “Bosses tell them from day one, You’re going to lose your job, the plant’s going to close, the union’s going to go on strike, you’ll get nothing, we won’t negotiate,” Waksmunski said. Today’s labor laws don’t do enough to protect workers. Continue reading “Letter to the Editor | Annie Morris” »
The anti-business Chamber
The Virginia Chamber of Commerce … anti-business? Yes. it’s true.
“On March 9-10, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce will take a delegation of Virginia business leaders to Washington D.C. to participate in the ‘Workforce Freedom Airlift,’ an anti-Card Check campaign sponsored by the U.S. Chamber,” began the propaganda piece in my e-mail in-box this morning. Spinning irony
“This legislation is monumental,” Ben Carter, the president of the Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce, wrote in a partisan-tinged letter to the editor published in The News Virginian last week, in which he recited the GOP talking points on the Employee Free Choice Act, legislation making its way through Congress that would put into effect safeguards for people who eschew fancy suits for blue collars and might want to organize to try to improve their pay and benefits. Matt Caterine | Support Employee Free Choice
On Nov. 4, the people of Virginia sent a loud and clear message to elected officials in Congress: they want leadership that will bring about real change in Washington. Despite misleading attacks from anti-worker special interests, voters elected Mark Warner to work with a pro-worker majority in Congress and a pro-worker president to take a critical step toward reinvigorating the middle class and turning around our crumbling economy.
