A Bradford Burgess layup on an inbounds play with seven seconds to go extended Virginia Commonwealth’s Cinderella run as the Rams knocked off Florida State 72-71 in overtime in the Southwest Region semifinals Friday night.
The Rams (27-11) led by as many as nine points in the second half but went ice-cold in the final four minutes of regulation. A Chris Singleton three-pointer tied the game at 65 with 46 seconds to go and ultimately sent the game to overtime. CBS tips off the Sweet Sixteen Thursday at 7 p.m. with the Big East survivors in the early slot – Butler against Syracuse and Washington vs. West Virginia. Nightcap games around 9:45 p.m. include Kentucky-Cornell and Kansas State facing Xavier.
Friday, the Tennesee-Ohio State game begins coverage at 7 p.m., along with Baylor against St. Mary’s. Later, it’s Northern Iowa meeting Michigan State before Purdue tackles Duke. EMU falls at Guilford, knocked out in Elite Eight

Ever since Feb. 10, Guilford has been looking for a rematch with the Runnin Royals. In a regular-season Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest, EMU throttled the then-No. 1 Quakers 90-63 in Greensboro, NC. On Saturday, Guilford got its rematch, again on its home floor, as the ODAC rivals met in the regional finals of the NCAA Men’s National Championship. This time around the Quakers withstood EMU’s early charge and grabbed a 90-80 victory.
When the two teams met in February, Eastern Mennonite put the clamps on the Quakers’ three point shooters and ran away with a 90-63 win.
With a Final Four berth on the line, the Runnin Royals started out by forcing Guilford center Tyler Sanborn (Mount Airy, NC/Elkin) to lose the handle on the ball and then got a three pointer from George Johnson (Richmond, Va./Miller School) to take the first lead.
