The Stakes: An NCAA bid for Tech baseball?

It’s possible, but there’s a big if facing the Virginia Tech baseball program this weekend, in the form of a three-game series at North Carolina.

If … Virginia Tech (34-18, 11-16 ACC) can steal a series win in Chapel Hill, not only are the Hokies golden for a spot in next week’s ACC Tournament, but they might just be in line to punch a ticket to the NCAAs.

The other side of the if … if UNC (39-13, 19-8 ACC) holds serve and sweeps Tech, the Hokies might face the prospect of not even making the ACC Tournament, which would deal a body blow to the squad’s hopes of playing in the NCAA Tourney. Read more

#25 UVa. completes DH sweep of Duke

The No. 25 Virginia baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Duke with a 10-3 victory over the Blue Devils in the second game Saturday afternoon at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The Cavaliers’ offense came alive and outscored Duke 22-6 in the doubleheader as Virginia (26-14-1, 11-10 ACC) clinched its fourth ACC series win of the season.

Stephen Bruno (Jr., Audubon, N.J.) continued his torrid hitting by going 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored. Bruno went 7-for-9 with six runs scored in the doubleheader as he extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Colin Harrington (Jr., Johnstown, Pa.) tied a career high with four RBI, while all of Virginia’s starters recorded at least one hit in the second game. Read more

#25 UVa. falls 6-3 at Duke

The No. 25 Virginia baseball team dropped Game 1 of its series at Duke, 6-3, Friday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. A four-run Duke fourth inning proved to be the difference.

Because of the threat for inclement weather Sunday, the final two games of the series will be played as a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday. Read more

Duke lax continues mastery of UVa.

The No. 7 Duke Blue Devils (11-3, 2-1 ACC) used a 6-0 run in the second half to elevate itself past the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (10-2, 2-1) on Friday night, 13-5, in front of 7,234 fans inside Klöckner Stadium.

With the loss, Duke claims the No. 1 seed in next weekend’s ACC Championship and plays Maryland at 5 p.m. UVa earns the No. 2 seed and will play North Carolina at 7:30 p.m., inside Klöckner Stadium. Read more

#12 UVa. women’s lax wins at #6 Duke

The 12th-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team earned a 14-12 victory at sixth-ranked Duke on Saturday (March 24) at Koskinen Stadium.

The victory, UVa’s second-consecutive, improved the Cavaliers’ record to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The loss was Duke’s first league setback of the year as the Blue Devils fell to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. Read more

Scott voted first-team All-ACC

Virginia senior forward Mike Scott (Chesapeake, Va.) is a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection for the 2011-12 season and UVa junior guard Jontel Evans (Hampton, Va.) is a member of the ACC’s All-Defensive Team.

Members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA) selected the teams that were announced on Monday (March 5).

Scott, who finished second in the balloting, is the first Virginia player to earn first-team All-ACC honors since Sean Singletary in 2008.  Read more

ACC announces scheduling plans

Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford announced on Friday the future scheduling formats as approved by the ACC’s Faculty Athletic Representatives and Athletics Directors.

The announcement was made following the annual ACC Winter Meetings and will go in effect once Pittsburgh and Syracuse become playing members in the conference.

“We have been engaged in discussions on the various options for integrating Pitt and Syracuse since early fall,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “It’s a tremendous tribute to the leadership at our schools that we will be able to seamlessly add Pitt and Syracuse at the appropriate time when they become full playing members.” Read more
