Downtown living: Urban Exchange sets a new course for Downtown Harrisonburg

Harrisonburg leaders have a vision for how to make their downtown thrive. Barry Kelley is helping bring that vision into a reality.
“I know downtown pretty well. And I thought this was the perfect area for the kind of project that we were thinking about doing,” said Kelley, who with fellow property developer Andrew Forward has turned a Downtown Harrisonburg parcel that was most recently a used-car lot into a four-story, mixed-use architectural wonder called the Urban Exchange. Architecture firm to formally open Valley office
The Gaines Group PLC, an architectural firm with more than 22 years of experience in Central Virginia, will on Tuesday officially open its Harrisonburg office to serve its growing clientele in the Shenandoah Valley.
“We are opening our second office in Central Virginia because of the huge demand for green architectural design and LEED consulting services in the area”, explains Charles Hendricks, AIA, CSI, CDT, LEED AP, the principal in charge of the Harrisonburg office. Read more

The sun’ll come out tomorrow
It’s not exactly an ideal time to be opening, say, a new exhibit at the ol’ museum, what with the economy being what it is and all. But you can’t always account for what shape the economy is going to be in when planning has to begin several years out.
“We actually think this could be a big boost to us because it opens us up to a new population that we haven’t had solid programming for in the past,” said Mike Sutton, the director of marketing at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, which is on schedule to open a new West Africa Farm exhibit in the fall. Tech sector pulls down $488M contract for Harrisonburg
A Harrisonburg-based military and emergency-response supplier has secured a $488 million federal contract to provide logistical support to military commands, federal agencies and other authorized customers worldwide.
The two-year contract with Tactical and Survival Specialties Inc. is expected to result in additional jobs for the Central Shenandoah Valley. Read more
