Hultzen, Hicks, Kline earn All-American nods
Three members of the Virginia baseball team have been named 2011 Louisville Slugger All-Americans as announced by Collegiate Baseball Thursday. Left-handed pitcher Danny Hultzen (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) was awarded First-Team All-America honors while catcher John Hicks (Jr., Sandy Hook, Va.) and relief pitcher Branden Kline (So., Frederick, Md.) earned third-team recognition. JMU’s Lowery, Herbek earn All-American honors
James Madison junior catcher Jake Lowery (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) and senior shortstop David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) have formed a formidable combination during the season and were rewarded Thursday being named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger All-America squads as chosen by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
Lowery was selected as the top catcher in the country with his First Team honor while Herbek was named to the Second Team. Together they are the 16th and 17th players in program history to be honored as a First Team, Second Team or Third Team All-American. They are the fourth set of teammates honored in the same season at JMU, the first to have both players listed as high as either First or Second Team. Read more
Lowery tabbed CAA Player of the Year
James Madison junior catcher Jake Lowery (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) was selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year to headline six Dukes earning All-CAA honors as announced Wednesday evening at the league’s annual awards banquet on the eve of the 2011 CAA Baseball Championship. JMU in national rankings, Herbek, Lowery on watch lists
Winners of six straight games overall and 10 straight in conference, James Madison moved into the Collegiate Baseball national rankings at 30th while shortstop David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) and catcher Jake Lowery (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) were each named semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy for National Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
JMU is coming off of a three-game sweep at Northeastern, in which the Dukes allowed two runs in 27 innings. That sweep combined with Old Dominion’s series loss at Hofstra gave JMU its second straight CAA first-place finish for the first time in program history. The Dukes will be the #1 seed for the CAA championship for the seventh time when they face fourth-seeded Georgia State at 3 p.m. Thursday in Wilmington, N.C. Read more
Collegiate Baseball puts UVa. at #17
The Virginia baseball team has earned a #17 national ranking in the preseason Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll, as announced Monday (Dec. 20) by the publication. The Collegiate Baseball poll is the first of the major publications’ rankings to come out for the 2011 season.
Led by eighth-year head coach Brian O’Connor, Virginia returns 22 letterwinners this season from its 51-14 squad which won the ACC Coastal Division and a regional championship in 2010. Among the letterwinners are Danny Hultzen (Jr., Bethesda, Md.), the reigning ACC Pitcher of the Year and a 2011 preseason All-American, and Keith Werman (Jr., Vienna, Va.), a 2010 Second-Team All-ACC honoree.
