Towson nips JMU in CAA lax final
The James Madison lacrosse team fell just short of claiming its third consecutive Colonial Athletic Association title, losing 8-7 at Towson in the CAA Championship Sunday afternoon at the Towson Soccer Complex.
Second-seeded JMU, winner of the last two CAA championships, saw its season end with an 11-7 record. Top-seeded Towson improved to 15-3 with its ninth straight win. The Tigers now advance to an NCAA Tournament play-in game against Northeast Conference champion Monmouth. Read more
#1 Northwestern tops #9 UVa. women’s lax
The ninth-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team dropped a close contest at No. 1 Northwestern on Saturday (April 28) at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. Ainsley Baker (Corning, N.Y.) led Virginia with two goals, while Kim Kolarik (Riva, Md.) finished with six saves in goal for the Cavaliers.
Virginia concluded the regular season with an 11-7 overall record. Northwestern improved to 16-1 on the season. Read more
#6 UVa. men’s lax overcomes sluggishness to top Penn
Steele Stanwick scored a career-high six goals and finished with seven points to lead the No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers (11-3) to a 10-8 victory over the Penn Quakers (3-10), Friday evening at the Whitman’s Sampler Mile High Classic, inside Sports Authority Field and Mile High.
With the seven points, Stanwick now moves up to No. 22 all-time in NCAA Division I career points with 260. Virginia is now 7-0 all-time in Inside Lacrosse events. Read more
JMU women’s lax wins in CAA semis
In the final minutes James Madison sophomore Amy Roguski (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) made a key defensive play and scored the game-winning goal as the Dukes beat Hofstra 10-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association women’s lacrosse semifinals Friday afternoon at the Towson Soccer Complex.
The second-seeded Dukes, winners of the last two CAA titles, advance to Sunday’s 2 p.m. championship game against the top-seeded Towson Tigers. Towson, a 12-11 winner over No. 4 seed Drexel in the other semifinal, has an opportunity to avenge its loss to the Dukes in the 2011 CAA final. JMU, meanwhile, will have the chance to make history as no CAA team has ever won three straight championships. Read more
Towson tops JMU women’s lax in 2OTs
James Madison rallied to tie the game 8-8 in regulation before falling 10-9 in double overtime at Towson in Colonial Athletic Association women’s lacrosse Sunday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
The defending two-time CAA champion Dukes saw their winning streak end at six games as JMU completed regular-season play with a 10-6 overall record and a 6-1 CAA mark. Read more
#11 UVa. women fall in ACC semis to #3 UNC
The fourth-seeded and 11th-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team was defeated by No. 1 seed and No. 3 ranked North Carolina, 14-6, in the semifinals of the 2012 ACC Tournament on Saturday (April 21) at Koskinen Stadium.
The loss dropped Virginia’s record to 11-6 while North Carolina improved to 14-2.
Senior attacker Josie Owen (Gibson Island, Md.) scored her sixth hat trick of the season with three goals and added two assists for five of Virginia’s eight points. Read more
#4 UVa. men’s lax falls in ACC semis
Steele Stanwick tallied seven points to break the UVa career point record held by Dough Knight (249), but it wasn’t enough as the No. 4 Virginia Cavaliers (10-3) fell to the No. 9 North Carolina Tar Heels (10-4) in the semifinal round of the ACC Championship on Friday night, 11-9, inside Klöckner Stadium. Now with 253 career points, Stanwick is tied with Gary Gait for No. 27 all-time in NCAA Division I points.
Colin Briggs started quickly for the Cavaliers, scoring 32 seconds into the game to give UVa a 1-0 lead. North Carolina scored back-to-back goals by Ryan Creighton and Jimmy Bitter to stake the Tar Heels to a 2-1 advantage with 4:26 left in the first quarter. Read more
